An aluminum-ion battery consists of two electrodes: a negatively charged anode made of aluminum and a positively charged cathode. New Flash!
ALL batteries have two electrodes - an anode and a cathode.

Probably a stupid question, but given the recent excitement over graphENE, I wonder if they’ve looked at that vs. graphITE?

"Our rechargeable aluminum battery generates about two volts of electricity. That's higher than anyone has achieved with aluminum." I think that sentence needs an "else" after "anyone". Otherwise it is self-negating.

Hey, as long as it’s only occasionally...

Two volts? So two in series = 4 volts, right?
And four in series = 8 volts.
Six would work for a car battery.
This could also be huge for solar power systems in the home.

With longer lasting batteries scenes like this may be a thing of the past:

replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad for the environment...”

Here it comes again. Batteries will go the way of light bulbs. They told us mercury was dangerous, and got us to stop eating tuna fish for awhile. Now, mercury hangs above our heads in the new, better bulbs.
But someone stands to make a killing on this.

“”We accidentally discovered that a simple solution is to use graphite, which is basically carbon.”
Well, there’s the problem right there. It uses carbon and everyone knows carbon is evil.

Me thinks, the first long distance electric cars powered by this battery, will appear in the country of Hongjie Dai’s ancestry. In the mean time, Audi has a 600 mile electric car ready to go.

This intriguing article omits one fact we all want to know - what is the energy density? In other words, how many watt/hours can be stored in a pound of battery?

Stanford University scientists have invented the first high-performance aluminum battery that’s fast-charging, long-lasting and inexpensive.
...
Really? Where can I buy this wondrous inexpensive battery?

This is an interesting article. Though I’ve learned to take a wait and see approach when it comes to new battery chemestries.

Sounds impressive but I wonder what the catch is.

“... improving the cathode material could eventually increase the voltage and energy density.”
Low energy density is the basic problem with batteries.
Fuel is always orders of magnitude better.
Sounds like this kind is even worse than what we use now.
But cheap.
