Pope Francis praises Iran deal in Easter peace wish

VATICAN CITY – In an Easter peace wish, Pope Francis on Sunday praised the framework nuclear agreement with Iran as an opportunity to make the world safer, while expressing deep worry about bloodshed in Libya, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.

Cautious hope ran through Francis' "Urbi et Orbi" Easter message, a kind of papal commentary on the state of the world's affairs, which he delivered from the central balcony of St. Peter's Square.

He had just celebrated Mass in rain-whipped St. Peter's Square for tens of thousands of people, who huddled under umbrellas or braved the downpour in thin, plastic rain-slickers.

Easter day is "so beautiful, and so ugly because of the rain," Francis said after Mass about Christianity's most important feast day. He expressed thanks for the flowers which bedecked the square and which were donated by the Netherlands, but the bright hues of the azaleas and other blossoms seemed muted by the gray skies.

Francis made his first public comments about the recent framework for an accord, reached in Lausanne, Switzerland, and aimed at ensuring Iran doesn't develop a nuclear weapon.

"In hope we entrust to the merciful Lord the framework recently agreed to in Lausanne, that it may be a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world."

Decrying the plentitude of weapons in the world in general, Francis said: "And we ask for peace for this world subjected to arms dealers, who earn their living with the blood of men and women."

Hmmmmm. His words put the entire matter in God’s hands. That’s the praise.

Still. Cautiously optimistic. But realism is that Iran will renig on any bad deal for them, or follow any path to nuclear weapons we’ve given them. Guaranteed. I’m 95% sure of it. More like 99%.

This deal is setting the stage for WWIII. If America is with Iran when it starts, I will tell friends in the military to leave, under any means necessary. Israel is the only country on Earth I would not want my friends, family, or myself having to go into battle against. Let me rephrase that: I wouldn’t want them going into battle against anyone, however I would tell them to desert or object and go to prison if it meant not having to face down the IDF.

“In hope we entrust to the merciful Lord the framework recently agreed to in Lausanne, that it may be a definitive step toward a more secure and fraternal world.”
Where is the “praise” in that?”

I call this praise. He is specifically calling out Obama’s framework. He didn’t have to do that. He could have hoped for a peaceful solution without specifically mentioning Obama’s scary nuclear proliferation deal with Iran.

Speaking of this deal though, I think putting things in God’s hands is the right way to express your sentiment.

God, in His providence can actually bring about good out of a bad deal.

It might take war or pain and suffering for a while but who knows? Good might eventually come out of it.

On Good Friday, Francis chastised the international community for what he called the complicit silence about the killing of Christians. On Easter he prayed that God would alleviate `’the suffering of so many of our brothers persecuted because of his name.”

I wish he had expressed himself the way you summarized what he said.

He specifically called out arms dealers, not the leaders who ordered the slaughter of innocents. I'm sure there are many bad arms dealers, but this sounds like a giant gun control program to me. He also specifically called out Obama’s terrible Iranian framework, giving his tacit approval in so doing. I hope Congress gets rid of the entire deal. Will the Pope say Congress is not supporting the peace process if they do?

I support your aims respecting the Iran deal and I share your views overall concerning this Pope, however, I will not twist words to fit ends ends.

Giving Iran the means to destroy Israel is not being a “peacemaker.” It is becoming more and more apparent that this pope is the False Prophet who will introduce the Beast to the world.

CBS says Iran is still chanting ‘Death to America’ but they don’t REALLY mean it!

CBS reports that in Iran this morning they’re chanting “Death to America,” but hey don’t worry about it, it’s just a habit, they don’t really mean it! LOL!

I see it as praise. For one thing, it’s not even entirely done. Also, “arms dealers” exist only because there is a market, they don’t create it. The Islamists and their enablers are the ones who do that, yet he couldn’t even mention them when he mentioned Yemen, etc.

How Jesuitical of him! And how fraternal! This man is in the Casuistry Hall of Fame. Or, as the Redskins said, he speaks with forked tongue.

I was thinking the same thing but did not want to be accused of anti-Catholicism.

Sadly, he doesn’t understand anything about political things but leftism.....God Help Us.

IIRC, Argentina and many other South American countries tend to be socialist and this Pope grew up under it. In this case, the Argies have generally been socialist from the Perons on down from what it looks like to me. I know I'm Lutheran but as a leader, I don't find confidence in him as I did with John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

Wise move. Not only it is against God, but to go against Israel, they can be very vicious on their enemies once they get riled up. I hope if the word is given to go against Israel, I do pray to God that there are enough level heads left in the military to say no, countermand the orders and maybe even remove those who gave the order from office.

Pope Francis, it is “Blessed are the peacemakers,” not “Blessed are the appeasers.”

Hey, at least he complained about the persecution of Christians -- most recently and notoriously, the mass-murder of nearly 200 students in Kenya -- but after a long period of cutting him a lot of slack in a difficult job, I'm done with him. What a buffoon he is.
