ARTESIA, Calif. (AP) — The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, the Southern California televangelist and author who beamed his upbeat messages on faith and redemption to millions from his landmark Crystal Cathedral only to see his empire crumble in his waning years, has died. He was 88.

Schuller died early Thursday at a care facility in Artesia, daughter Carol Schuller Milner said. He was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer in 2013.

Schuller, who preached in a flowing purple robe and outsized aviator glasses, led an evangelical Protestant ministry that was a product of modern technology. He and his late wife, Arvella, started a ministry in 1955 with $500 when he began preaching from the roof of a concession stand at a drive-in movie theater southeast of Los Angeles.

“led an evangelical Protestant ministry that was a product of modern technology”

Weird way to say it - “a product of”.

The following:

“an evangelical Protestant ministry that **made extensive use** of modern technology”

Is much more objective and accurate.

But it wouldn’t sound as demeaning.

I say this as no big fan of the Robert Schuller.

Although I am saddened by any death, I recognize him as one of the forerunners of the hope and prosperity gospel.

The guy had a burning desire to present God’s message. His story is an interesting one. He started out without a church, wound up with the Crystal Cathedral.

Hey, he had more impact on people than most of us ever will.

We are not his judge. And none of us live or spread our Faith perfectly.

Well, getting his start running a drive-in church service does make the phrase very apropos, imho, in the "era of the automobile", particularly in SoCal.

I will always have wonderful memories of the Glory of Christmas and Glory of Easter renditions at the Crystal Cathedral-—now interestingly a Catholic Cathedral.

It would be nice if the Catholic Church in the OC could bring this back.

RIP Dr. Schuller.

A long full life, & now Rev. Schuller walks in the Halls of Jesus.

His Crystal Cathedral is in good hands. It will soon reopen as a Catholic diocesan cathedral.

I am glad it will be put to good use.

I wonder how many illegals they can fit into the basement?

LOL

Probably not a very nice comment, but I am not a big fan of some of the policies of some churches. This isn’t limited to Catholicism either, but they are on record wanting illegals to bear no responsibility for what they do, but the rest of us to bear it instead.

I happen to be a Catholic.

And it annoys me to no end that the Catholic Church-—along with our federal, state, and, local government promotes and encourages illegal immigration.

I’m sure it does, and I’m also sure many Catholics feel the same way. It isn’t the only denomination that does this, so it isn’t my intent to make this a bash against the church. It was merely the entity in the Crystal Cathedral ownership.

When Christ said render unto Caesar (Rome or whatever), I think he meant things like this. The Church should be law-abiding. Instead it sides with those who break our laws.

How is that a good moral object less? Every church should support reasoned laws, and our border laws are important.

Thanks for your comments. I think it represents the church well when members call it on wrong decisions like this one. To me this is a very clear cut issue, and members seeing that way actually helps to defend the church overall, even if it has gotten it totally wrong for the time being.

I always enjoyed listening to him because he was “positive”. And that takes away stress.
