Colorado Lawmakers Scramble to Keep Millions in Marijuana Taxes (Refund Madness)
NY Times via MSN ^ | 4/01/15 | JACK HEALY

DENVER — In the State Capitol, they are calling it Refund Madness.

A year after Colorado became the first state to allow recreational marijuana sales, millions of tax dollars are rolling in, dedicated to funding school construction, marijuana education campaigns and armies of marijuana inspectors and regulators. But a legal snarl may force the state to hand that money back to marijuana consumers, growers and the public — and lawmakers do not want to.

The problem is a strict anti-spending provision in the state Constitution that touches every corner of public life, like school funding, state health care, local libraries and road repairs. Technical tripwires in that voter-approved provision, known as the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, may require Colorado to refund nearly $60 million in marijuana taxes.

If we get your taxes, we can keep your taxes.

Government wrote the law but doesn't want to obey it because they got too much tax revenue from all the sectors. In other words, they couldn't find ways to spend the excess from everywhere fast enough and had a surplus. But they will not give it back, even

if they have to change the law retroactively to do it. I don't approve of the sales of that stuff, but this is about government stealing money somebody else earned.

These guys ought to be sitting on a horse under a tall tree with their hands tied behind them.

Politicians see that money, and they don't want to give it up.

Typical politicians.

Yep, I have no use for the stuff, but this is all about the money and the politicians, not the taxed item.

Typical politicians.

Tall tree and a short rope indeed.

Typical politician is making a big deal about not knowing to whom the refund should go...it is obfuscation.

Listen, you moron, money is fungible, you cannot distinguish an oil drilling dollar from a pot dollar. The money should go back to those who paid taxes, any taxes, proportionate to the amount of taxes they paid - PERIOD.

Anything else is typical political shenanigans.

“Just wait until people learn about the increase in lung cancer.”

In states where pot is legal, most people are going smoke-free or eating it.

Extracts become cheap and very pure once legalized. They offer all the active ingredients of smoke but none of the burned compounds or smell. It’s like water vapor and you can puff one right next to a cop.

It is also safer than nicotine e-cigarettes since you don’t need any solvents. Just pure plant extract and heat is all you need.

Not to mention that research to date has not established a link between lung cancer and smoking pot (which contains tumor-suppressing chemicals).

Oh, haven’t you heard? Dope smoke is good for you. It’s not like ALL SMOKE IS HARMFUL TO THE LUNGS or anything like that. I mean it’s not like the body reacts to smoke by trying to expel it from the body via coughing......

Yes it is, and research has shown a link between pot smoking and bronchitis - but not lung cancer.

Government wrote the law but doesn't want to obey it because they got too much tax revenue from all the sectors.

Actually, Doug Bruce wrote the law and citizens voted to enact it.

...even if they have to change the law retroactively to do it.

They can't. The citizens would have to vote for that.

You clearly missed how I agreed with the grain of truth in your sarcastically-made point and then brought the exchange back on topic.

And they will lie, cheat, dissemble, equivocate, threaten and coerce voters into accepting it. Process doesn’t matter. Government will does.

I'm just funnin' with you folks. : )

However seriously, if you can find a means to eliminate carcinogens from the process of consumption, more power to you.

OTOH, it's just not for me. Give me my Clase Azul Tequila for a good buzz. Cheers and enjoy.
