Dems want to empower Boehner

House Democrats fighting for leverage in the GOP Congress are hoping they can empower an unlikely ally: Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Democrats are outnumbered by more than 50 members – and have almost no power to bring bills to the floor.

But they see Boehner as a willing compromiser on must-pass legislation like funding the government and raising the debt ceiling – once the Speaker can convince his troops that the partisan route endorsed by his conservative wing has been denied. By banding together in veto-sustaining majorities against conservative proposals demanded by Boehner’s right flank, Democrats hope to both sink those GOP measures and grease the skids for more moderate compromises.

“[The Republicans] have a majority party that's deeply divided,” Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the Democratic whip, said Thursday from his office in the Capitol.

“And … what we've learned is if we stick together – and we have been sticking together, we've been very unified – that it can empower Speaker Boehner at some point in time to say, 'Look, I tried every which way I can think of to accomplish the objectives that our caucus wants to do. But if I can't accomplish those, I will not allow the government to shut down, the debt limit to be not extended, or other things that are harmful to the country,’” Hoyer said.

Those dynamics were on full display in the recent fight over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

House conservatives had insisted that the package include amendments blocking President Obama's executive actions on immigration, and the House passed five such provisions on largely party-line votes.

"If he could be turned, he would make a powerful ally!" - Lord Vader

This is basically the situation we are in, except that Boehner didn't need any convincing. "Conservatism must be thwarted at all cost!" This is their battle cry!

As far as I am concerned Boehner and McConnell are as big, or bigger, enemies than Obama.

Boehner has proven himself to be the likely ally of the left.

This is it - the House better do what it can to neutralize this bozo now and get him the hell out of there asap.

It’s the bottom of the ninth with no men on base for us true Americans. With Cruz at the helm and Boehner kept in check, maybe we can tie it up and go into extras, if you catch my drift.

But they see Boehner as a willing compromiser

Which is exactly what he is. A man without principles whose sense of personal positional powertrumps all other concerns.

“There was an opportunity that presented itself to work in a bipartisan way to find the appropriate offsets, spending offsets,” he said Thursday. “The door opened, and I decided to walk in it. As simple as that.”

Boehner's now an admitted liar. And I remember all the weak, canned excuses that our supposedly Conservative House members made after voting for this creep.

That's right...Democrat Speaker of the House John Boehner!

Here’s a different view:

There is a group of Republicans which, although NOT the MAJORITY of all Republicans in Congress, nevertheless wants all Republicans to dance to their tune.

Will this group work to educate their brothers (and sisters) to explain why the group’s positions and prescriptions are correct? No. Too hard....

Will this group work to educate voters so that RINOs will be rejected in the next primaries? No. Too hard...

Will this group prepare programs and bills that MEET THEIR OWN STATED OBJECTIVES, like cutting spending, cutting waste and reining in rogue bureaucracies? No. Too hard...

What’s left? Complain about the leaders elected by the majority of Republicans, giving ammunition to the Democrats for the next election.

Joining the Democrats in complaining about Republicans is SOOOooo EASY! And it makes good headlines in the clown-media, too...

One way or another, there is going to be a day of reckoning for such a man. The only way Boehner survives in 2016 is with a Hilary Clinton or Jeb Bush win in 2016. I am betting neither of those two will win. A Ted Cruz win will bring a well earned retribution on John Boehner.

If we ever want our government back we need to get this word out to the people who elected him when he campaigned as a conservative. In Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, they found ways to get the truth out, we need to as well, even if it’s door-to-door.

We all think too big, Congress, Speaker, yada yada. We need to think Representative which is really all he is and get this back to a local level, that’s the only place where he can be held accountable.

Help me, Freepers, to find ways to get a “Back to the People” campaign going.
