WASHINGTON (CNN) As the political world's focus begins to turn to the race to succeed President Barack Obama, a new CNN/ORC poll finds Americans are split over whether Obama's time in office has been a success. But they are now more likely than at any point during his tenure to say things in the country are going well.
In February 2009, shortly after Obama took office, 21% of Americans said things in the country were going well, 79% that they were going badly.
The new poll finds 53% saying things are going well, 46% badly. That's the highest share saying things are going well that CNN/ORC polls have found during Obama's time in office, though it is not significantly higher than the 52% saying things were going well in November.
The rising optimism about how the country is doing comes after several months of strong economic news. The current unemployment rate of 5.5% is the lowest of his presidency, and although average gas prices -- often closely tied with public perceptions of the economy -- are slightly higher than they were a few months ago, they remain lower than they were a year ago.
Assessing Obama's presidency overall, 50% consider his time in office a success, 47% a failure. And for those who say his time in office has been a failure, 37% say that's been because of his own actions, while just 9% attribute it to Congress blocking the President from action.
Perceptions of the success of Obama's presidency after six years in office falls in between ratings of his two immediate predecessors. Just 39% said they considered George W. Bush's presidency a success in January 2007, 55% considered it a failure. Bill Clinton, by contrast, was broadly deemed successful,

Did they poll faculty & teacher’s lounges and NGOs?
CNN has lost most of its viewership, so pardon me while I chuckle
Goes along with Hillary being ahead by double digits, of course. Some people are living in fairy land. These must be the same people who had Israel Exit polls showing a tie in seats, when Likud wins by 6.
CNN polls are fake
In related news, at least 50% of US voters can’t find the United States on a map of the United States.
Why wouldn’t the increase in optimism be related to throwing the democrats out of Congress and state houses, and governors like Walker?
if this is a success, I wonder what a failure would look like?
They only polled people in Boulder Colorado?
I would agree. He’s been very successful at what he promised he would do.
“Did they poll faculty & teachers lounges and NGOs?”
No, the cnn newsroom no doubt.
If Obama were failing, it would look like the 80’s.
Choomers no doubt.
RE: I would agree. Hes been very successful at what he promised he would do.
OK, success has many shades but it does not tell us whether being successful at what one intends to do is good or bad for the country.
One can say that Hugh Chavez was successful at transforming Venezuela into his own ideology and he won several elections (including his successor Maduro ).
If that is what you call success, then Obama’s policies have been successful in that sense.
I’d laugh my ass off, but you know damn well that’s what they did. Okay..., okay...
1. Do you support Obama or do you want Whites to run everything in this nation?
2. Do you approve of Obama, or do are you a future member of the KKK?
3. Do you think his foreign policy is good, or do you want to nuke the North Pole and kill Santa Claus?
Americans are split over whether Obama’s time in office has been a success.
If you have a job and pay taxes...he’s an a-hole!
If you depend on the taxes that people with a job pay...he’s brilliant!
