As we feared, the most egregious bill introduced this session is Senate Bill (SB) 128, a concerted effort to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Despite failing to pass similar laws five previous times in California, supporters of these so-called “Death with Dignity” laws have been emboldened by both a national effort to expand legalized physician-assisted suicide from coast to coast, and by the high-profile case of a 29-year-old California cancer patient who moved to Oregon to end her life there.
While many such cases are tragic, just three states have succumbed to the legalization efforts of pro-death forces. Only Oregon, Washington and Vermont currently allow this heinous practice.
The first hearing on SB 128 (Wolk D-Vacaville) is set for Wednesday, March 25 before the Senate Education Committee. If the bill passes there, it will then head to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Many conservatives believe that her life belonged to her. That the decision to end her life belonged to her and her God. The state, the church, the medical community, the courts and FReepers have no say in this.
End of life decisions belong to the individual.

And I don't require a law allowing me to speed up the inevitable should that scenario unfold. Likewise, it matters little to me if any level of government thinks it will not "allow" me to take such measures.
Hey don’t be so cutesy with God, pulling Him out only where convenient. Anyone who believes in God has an interest in this. Their interest may be badly taken or well taken but they definitely have an interest.
What do you think is happening with this bill - IT IS THE STATE HAVING A SAY IN ASSISTED SUICIDE! Call yourself a libertarian, but not a conservative; and don't lump conservatives with your libertarian philosophy.
I see no problem with assisted suicide if that’s the individuals wish. I do not want to burden my children with the care of a demented, terminally I’ll old woman.
But this will have put a foot in the door for those without a voice in the future. Our laws always end up going farther than ever intended and in the future maybe you will be required to commit suicide by age 80.

The reason liberals want this bill to pass is the same reason Oregon passed their assisted suicide law; to help their state run health care. It was never for any altruistic reason. You want California Care to work better? I sure as h*ll don't.
It will make us another Denmark eventually.
Brittany Maynard is already in my prayers. If you have not already done so, pray for her as well. But I will never endorse any government sanction of her assisted suicide as you have done.

I agree, in principle. Unfortunately, in the real world opening the door to assisted suicide seems to lead to non-consensual “euthanasia” and people feeling pressured and coerced to off themselves for a variety of reasons. I still believe a person’s life belongs to themselves, and no-one else, but I do see a slippery slope here.
I'm trying to get conservatives to do something to stop this bill in the California (not the federal) legislature, which I know most Freepers are.
We should do our best to take care of ourselves and our families and survive the collapse of our nation.

I am not for suicide, but it's pretty hard to stop someone from doing so. Assisted suicide is a totally different story; especially if it's government sanctioned.
Also, government sanctioned assisted suicide will have economic consequences. We now have government run health care. Life insurance companies don’t pay out if suicide is the cause of death; they will if SB 128 passes. Think about it.
If SB 128 passes, think about this as well - it will eventually be a financial decision for any government run health care and not one based on pain. The state will say they can’t afford to take care of you and that you should end it. They can use guilt...why spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to live just another 6 months without a good quality of life. Let your children/taxpayers not waste that money and instead let’s have a celebration of your life as you kill yourself.
Currently, Oregon allows assisted suicide for those with 6 months to live. Legislation has been submitted to extend that to one year. The slippery slope . . .
