Energy companies are preparing to shut down nearly 16 gigawatts of power by the end of this year as the deadline for compliance with new federal environmental regulations looms.
In total, some 85 coal-fired generating units at 36 locations are expected to close in the coming months in part because of Environmental Protection Agency regulations. The largest set of retirements is set for June, when electricity demand starts to peak as Americans turn on their air conditioners for the summer. Most of these retirements will come from coal-fired power plants in Appalachia.
We are currently showing nearly 300 GW of in-service coal capacity at the end of December 2014, so 13 GW would represent a reduction of approximately 4.3%, U.S. Energy Information Administration economist Tim Shear told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
This may not sound like a huge number, but US electricity markets are traditionally balkanized so if much of these retirements take place in a small region, the balancing authorities in those areas will have to plan accordingly, Shear said.
Utilities are looking to close smaller, less efficient coal plants by the end of this year before the EPAs Mercury Air Toxics Standards, or MATS, kick in,according to EIA.

And China is opening news ones.
Mostly poor, white people!
If you like your lights......
EPA administrators ought be made to jump off the U.S. capital in unison.
More like ...."if you like your heat"....
since the regime lies about everything....expect global cooling.
IMHO, these power companies should tell the EPA to go jump in the lake and refuse to shutdown.
Maybe this egregious action by the EPA will be enough to cause the LIVs to awaken a little from their slumber.
How are we going to keep illegals warm if we shut down coal plants?
i swear they want the country to implode in hatred and civil war.
As if electricity rates weren’t high enough already. Sheesh.
Dissolve the EPA, ATF, and IRS.
For every coal-fired power plant that closes, a member of Congress should have the power to their offices and residences cut off.
Once these priveleged a$$holes have to live under the same rules as the people for whom they work, things will start to change.
Yo, EPA Bull Dyke, how are we now supposed to power up our Government Motors Volts?
This is how crony capitalism works... and it stinks to high heaven.
More like ....”if you like your heat”....
On a side note, I live in central KY and a friend is an electrical contractor that specializes in solar power installations. His business is booming.
They should be forced to jump off the rim of the Grand Canyon.
Nothing will wake them up.
For later
I have driven passed the coal trains lined up there many times.
Americans are so PC conditioned over this Eco-crap that there is no fight.
Take the FCC for instance, they were voted the right to vote in their own laws
like the internet neutrality boondoggle. What this does exactly is allow the
President (One Man) to make law by threatening that agency to do his bidding.
And to legally install unelected people who would be willing participants.
If one person in our Gov was breaking the law and running for office it
would be a conflict of interest if that person wasn't charged/convicted
because that single person could be blackmailed. This is an extortion
concept that was brought into DC for that single most outrageous
power grab in American history.
Republicans will not fight it because they know at some point they would
be able to wield that power, and Power is all that matters.
Any one man willing to stop this insanity couldn't openly talk about stopping it
because the entire establishment would be up in arms. No one man can fight that
army which includes a ruthless MSM as a willing participant. This person
would need to be a deceiver which would go against their beliefs of stopping the madness
and would intentionally make that one person just as bad. But this just may be the only way.
