McDonald's MCD +0.6% worldwide sales fell a more than expected 1.7% in February, marking nine consecutive months of declines.
This comes a week after new CEO Steve Easterbrook assumed the top job. Easterbrook, who has said he considers himself an internal activist, is faced with reviving the lagging sales that cost previous CEO Don Thompson his job.
U.S. sales fell 4%, as the fast food giant continues to face heavy competition from fast casual chains like Chipotle and Panera.
Consumer needs and preferences have changed, said the company in a statement. McDonalds current performance reflects the urgent need to evolve with todays consumers, reset strategic priorities and restore business momentum.
Last week, McDonalds announced it would start to phase out the use of chickens that are raised with human antibiotics.
Sales in Asia, where the company is still being punished by customers following a food safety scandal last year, declined by 4.4%. Rebuilding brand trust by strengthening McDonalds quality and value perceptions is one of APMEAs top priorities for 2015, the company said.
Total sales were partially offset by a 0.7% gain in Europe sales, where the company saw strength in the U.K. and Germany but still faces headwinds in Russia.
The 1.7% worldwide sales decline reported by McDonalds was much worse than estimates of a 0.3% decline, according to analysts polled by research firm Consensus Metrix, and is telling of how much work the company has left to do under Easterbrook. Last month the company reported a 1.8% decline.
Shares of McDonalds declined 1% to $96.14 in premarket trading and are up 5% over the last 12 months.

just one opinion...
much of the chow there is just awful
improve the basic product before doing a bunch more promotions or expensive advertising
I agree with you completely.
Doesn’t happen often. :-)
I have no problem at my neighborhood Micky D’s. I find their $1.50 double cheeseburgers to have good value. Plus I can use info on the receipt to go online complete a survey and get a number that allows me to BOGO free breakfast sandwich or quarter pounder
I love the sausage egg macs. But dang they’re expensive now so I don’t get them very often.
Chipotle got a lot better when McDonald’s sold it. It was beyond their level of expertise and competence.
I have a lot of knowledge about 1990’s McD execs, having been a business consultant to them. Nice people, but making decisions is a veery slow process. Some good people, lots of idiots who prove the Peter Principle.
Mcgriddles are delicious, but you can feel your arteries constrict after eating one.
Wendy’s has better burgers and fries.
We don’t go to any chain restaurants at all. When we eat out, we go to local places where we know the owners.
“Havent been to a McDs in years, and have NO intention of EVER returning.”
I ate something in McD’s about two years ago, can’t even recall exactly what it was now but it was bad enough to make me remember why I had not been inside one in decades. I used to say I would eat there if I was really hungry and nothing else was available but now I can’t imagine being that hungry. I always thought this was the worst of the hamburger chains even back when they were setting sales records. Their method seemed to be to appeal to children so they would scream for their parents to take them there.
I recall a woman asking me once why the burgers at places like McDonalds, Hardees etc. were so much better than what she made at home. My reply was short and sweet, “Honestly I can’t think of a reason unless it is that you just don’t know how to make a hamburger.”
They used to be good when they were McDonalds. Now they bow to the food police and want try to also be Chick-fil-a, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius, Denny’s, and Starbucks.
This one?
Allstate Voice Commercial - Bonus Check
Just remember: every commercial has to have a black guy in it, and the black guy usually makes the white guy look foolish. Because that is what we all know - white men are foolish and must be insulted.
You aren’t missing anything.
So Cal has so much lovely Mexican food I don’t know why any one would go to a chipoltes there.
I agree, the Frys used to be the best, I think they changed the oil and it ruined them.
Also they have way too many things on the menu. Simplicity is the key, witness Five Guys and others who only have a few things and they do it right.
Amen.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I guess the Affirmative Action Peter Principle is just one big flat line.
I try to do that. Hardly hit the big chains.
One thing I discovered at an outdoor event downtown was an outfit called Wurst Wagen. It is excellent. Run by a German fellow and his American wife. They have been doing excellent and stay booked up and sold out most of the time.
Other kids are going “I got McDonalds’ Hamburgers.”
And there you are with a “house burger.”
“Ewww, where you get that big, welfare, green-pepper burger?”
*crying* “My Mother made it....waaaaaah!”

Yes, that is the one I saw just a few minutes ago.
The really irritating thing is: Do you think Allstate is giving you something? They are overcharging you assuming you will have an accident. They refund only if you don’t.
A cup of coffee is probably the only thing I WOULD buy at McD’s...except I have stopped drinking coffee lately!
