Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) is introducing legislation to relax the rules for healthy school lunches.
At the School Nutrition Associations (SNA) 2015 Legislative Action Conference at the JW Marriott Monday, Hoeven announced the Healthy School Meals Flexibility Act to give schools more flexibility in complying with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations when it comes to whole grains and sodium levels.
The bill would allow schools to revert back to 2012 standards, which require at least half of all grains served in school breakfast and school lunch to be whole grain rich. The standard now is for 100 percent of all grains offered to be whole grain rich.
The bill also prevents USDA from requiring further sodium reductions in school meals below the current level, which took effect July 2014.
Under the mandate, schools have to keep sodium levels in school lunch below 1,230 mg for grades K-5, 1,360 mg for grades 6-8 and 1,420 mg for grades 9-12 for the week.

Like many FReepers have brought up in the past; who gave Moochelle the authority to tell anyone what they can or cannot eat?
Exactly, point us to where in the Constitution she has ANY authority of any kind.
How about abolishing the Department of Education too?
I know my daughter’s kids can’t stand to eat school lunches. Tasteless.
When are they gonna introduce a non-binding resolution scolding the president for not holding his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance?
Yep.let’s just repeal the whole darn thing. Why does a bureaucrat in Washington DC tell us what kids in school eat for lunch in the first place?, I would.love a societal debate about issues such as this, and discuss why in the Sam hill the federal government has any role at all with school lunches.
So what, it will just get vetoed. This is all BS to make the rubes vote republican again and again.
How about a bill that simply says that local school districts
have the ultimate decision as to what foods to serve?
Get the feds the hell out of it.
This is what happens when your school district gets money from the Feds. They take over and the local taxpayers, who contribute the bulk of the funding lose their power to run their schools. Refuse to take federal money. It is the only way to preserve free schooling.
I did not see in the constitution anything empowering Michelle Obama the power to dictate school lunches.
I had a hefty hag control freak supervisor who made routine suggestions about my diet. I went to a good Wendy’s and a local Italian place often just to be a good dissident.
TypicalRepublicans. Always trying to conservatizing liberalism.
Hoeven has been a huge disappointment.
Of course she has none. The regulations all come from the Department of Education bureaucrats who are happy to hide behind her ample...behind.
Also doesn’t the Constitution forbid cruel and unusual punishment?
Another Republican who just doesn't get it. Schools are supposed to be run locally. They decide the menus they provide. End of discussion. What are the Repbulicans, anyway? The party of the "less awful"?
Remove Moochelle’s rules from the underage kids, who don’t have a choice. Instead place them on the adult EBT cards for all those overweight Obama voters who chose her as part of the package deal.
Not that putting a muzzle on the Mooch is a bad thing and all, but aren’t there more important issues to deal with, like Barry’s out be out treason?
