China has dropped some of the world's leading technology brands from its approved state purchase lists, while approving thousands more locally made products, in what some say is a response to revelations of widespread Western cybersurveillance.
Others put the shift down to a protectionist impulse to shield China's domestic technology industry from competition.
Chief casualty is U.S. network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O), which in 2012 counted 60 products on the Central Government Procurement Center's (CGPC) list, but by late 2014 had none, a Reuters analysis of official data shows.
Smartphone and PC maker Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has also been dropped over the period, along with Intel Corp's (INTC.O) security software firm McAfee and network and server software firm Citrix Systems (CTXS.O).
The number of products on the list, which covers regular spending by central ministries, jumped by more than 2,000 in two years to just under 5,000, but the increase is almost entirely due to local makers.
The number of approved foreign tech brands fell by a third, while less than half of those with security-related products survived the cull.

I know this will make the Tyrants happy along with the controlled media.
It will never come back here. The so called free trade deals (aka rigid trade) are only good for the other countries where they pay no tariffs but we do to countries like China.
The taxes here are too high, the regulations are too much and it’s no secret that big business is trying to drive down wages.
Must be that “free trade” I’ve been hearing about.
Sometimes they do it with entire companies, such as with Nortel being completely gutted by Huawei.

And the darned thing is, the Chinese make Russian military stuff better and cheaper!
They get the companies to setup factories then they start making copies of the products. They no longer need those foolish companies.
Any American company that thought they could get by on the cheap by going to China deserves to get screwed.
When China slams the door shut on their products, look for a bunch of them to go under because they neglected the home market.
[ This might be a good thing. We could see some manufacturing come back to the US. Lord knows we have plenty of area in the heartland where sprawling factories could be created. ]

AND they can direct the U.S. spyware results to THEIR government instead of to the U.S. government. A real win-win for China.

The Chinese Government is also going to be using their own fork of Android on the phones they will allow to be used by government workers, entirely separate from any other Android operating systems. This was announced sometime last year prior to the prohibition of Apple and other non-Chinese made cell phones by government agencies, so that announcement is pretty anti-climactic. — PING!
