HJS, I have been reading the book excerpts and the Nimitz graybook pages on a daily basis.
We cannot imagine the daily losses we were suffering in early 1945 in the numbers of dead, missing and wounded.
We think the war was over in early 1945, but it was not, either in Europe or the Pacific.
I once found a newspaper page from Feb. 1945 in my parents’ attic. The entire page was covered with the names, in very small print, of the men who were listed as killed, wounded, and missing from just one county in NJ in that month.
One county.
Of one state.
400,000 is a lot of men to lose in any war.
When an escort carrier is hit by kamikazes and sinks in ten minutes, with 350 of 900 men missing (USS Bismarck Sea), we can scarcely wrap our heads around it today.
We know how it all turned out, but they were living it one day at a time.
Your daily threads help us to appreciate that.

Much of the war reporting throughout, much of it filed from HQ, has to this point been optimistic, Pollyannish even. David Dempsey’s report on p.4 may be, in contrast, the most somber thing I have seen yet in the pages of the Times since the U.S. entered the war.
