The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cincinnati issued a warning to Christians about the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, ahead of its release over the weekend weekend.
"The story line is presented as a romance; however, the underlying theme is that bondage, dominance, and sadomasochism are normal and pleasurable," Archbishop Dennis Marion Schnurr posted on the Archdiocese of Cincinnati's Facebook page.
The movie tells the story of a sexual relationship between a wealthy businessman and a college student and includes scenes that depict whipping and bondage.
"This movie is in direct contrast to the Christian message of Gods design for self-giving and self-sacrificing love, marriage and sexual intimacy," he continued. "The movie is a direct assault on Christian marriage and on the moral and spiritual strength of Gods people. We need to inform our people about the destructive message of this movie and to highlight the beauty of Gods design for loving relationships between a husband and wife in the bond of marriage."

Amen! :-)
I don’t believe in censorship, and I don’t see it being proposed here. Since I’m an adult, I read what I choose-so I got the book awhile back to see if it was really sexy and romantic-in my opinion, it was not-mostly, it was silly and ridiculous-so I gave it to a neighbor who is also single and revels in such fantasies of male domination-she loved it. She also lacks self esteem-that song by Offspring could have been written for her...
The writing was as bad/worse than my first attempts in a creative writing course in college-and anyone with a bit of sense can see that the female character has self esteem issues-most of the women I know would have filed a complaint against Mr. Grey for stalking-not signed a contract with him for consensual abuse...
Beating, binding, and torturing women in the name of love is a Muslim thing.
Definitely not for Catholics, who go by I Corinthians 13 in love matters:
Love is patient, love is kind,
Love envies no one; Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude.
Never selfish, nor quick to take offense.
Love keeps no score of wrongs; does not gloat.
Love will never come to an end.
I saw Last Tango in Paris with my husband-to-be the year we both graduated from college-both of us were into art films, but even to our young eyes that one was awful-but 50 Shades sounds even more cringe-worthy...
It's not. However, many people mistake a non-binding opinion that some media should be avoided for "censorship."
One acquaintance of mine said she was reading it, but since she had terminal cancer, all I said was, "Not the sort of thing I like."
I think some women are not reading it because they would like the situation, but because they feel superior to the woman in the book. Sort of like my reading about the Kardashians in the UK Daily Mail.
50SOG: Boring.
That is a good analogy that illustrates the problem those women seem to have separating a fictional character and a “reality” show actress-also a fictional character-from real women in the real world...
Oh, back in the day, like 1850, there were complaints that people weren’t paying attention to their real lives because they were so involved in Balzac’s novels. It’s human nature to need some escape from reality.
Saw it with an old flame when it first came out. I like Brando much better as Don Corleone....than as a porn star (gack.....my eyes!). Don’t even remember who the ingenue was but remember that she was much easier on the eyes. .
"But during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn't real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Brando and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn't console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take."
Brando was and still is the godfather-can’t imagine anyone in the part.
I remember being sort of embarrassed to be seeing that movie in mixed company-even with the guy I was romantically involved with and got married to that summer- when I peeked over at him, he looked uneasy, too. I can hardly believe I was ever that innocent...
Thankfully, I do not really know what it’s about and don’t care to. If the general public is gaga over it, I generally skip it.
Thank you, Archbishop Schnurr.
We need more clergymen to call this out.
Good points there.
+1
