Reread and looked at the structure.
I am now unsure exactly what the writer had in mind. As most of the MSM would have, in their typically bad usage, meant any number of things. As this is National Review, I usually give them the benefit of the doubt. I do tend to think that the participle dangles a bit.

Maybe it is time to remember why the Crusades happened and what a problem islam was and is. It is also not a bad thing to understand what caused the reformation of the Church and why the Church needed reforming in the first place and why it can never happen in islam.
Christianity was not the problem it was the masses not having access to the written word of the "Bible" with only a very select few disseminating and manipulating that knowledge. The written koran is easily read by all and it is the problem with islam.
I agree you can definitely read it both ways. But, given the author’s perspective in the article, I concluded he is not saying the president is a Christian.

China has forced the imams of Xinjiang to dance in the street, and swear to an oath that they will not teach religion to children as well telling them that prayer is harmful to the soul.

Many of the imams were forcibly given Chinese flags – the same demonstration also included university students.
During the speeches, young people were told to stay away from mosques, and that the prayer was harmful to ones health and instead were encouraged to dance. Female teachers were instructed to teach children to stay away from religious education and made to swear an oath that they will keep children away from religion.

Controversy still swirls around Obama’s comments during the National Prayer Breakfast this week, where he chastised Christians for getting on their “high horse” over the ongoing global jihad, invoking medieval abuses that occurred hundreds of years ago during the Crusades and Inquisition.
But perhaps it is Obama who should avoid getting on his high horse, since according to recently published statistics, Obama’s drone campaign has killed more people during the six years of his presidency than were killed the 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition.

Chuck Todd is rarely this honest, but he interrupted a guest this morning to put forth his theory that Obama insulted Christians with his comments about the Crusades because he actually just kinda hates the National Prayer Breakfast.

… the Messenger of God commanded me and this was his last command to me: …to raid them, without inviting them [to Islam], and to destroy and burn.
