$1,200-a-Day Union Workers Force Shut-Down of 29 West Coast Ports
Breitbart California ^ | by Chriss W. Street

Posted on 02/08/2015 12:57:56 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) announced that loading and unloading operations at all 29 West Coast ports would temporarily be suspended this weekend in response to union slowdowns that brought freight movements at the ports to a near standstill.

PMA members stated that they cannot afford the almost $1,200 per day cost to employ International Longshore and Warehouse Union members to do little work.

After Breitbart broke the story on Thursday that union members of the ILWU planned to “walk out within the week,” the PMA employer group announced they can no longer continue to pay workers the premium pay for diminished productivity.

With ILWU members continuing to withhold the needed crane operators and slow crane movements, shippers and their customers estimated they were losing $1 billion a day. But a complete shut-down is expected to raise the U.S. economic pain to $2 billion a day....

Funny thing is I’m the one wanting to preserve American jobs and industry, you’re the one who is cheerfully cutting off his nose to spite his face and costing good paying skilled jobs. I don’t have any problem with them striking against Chinese imports. I have a big problem with them screwing over what manufacturing and export work we have left in Obamaland.

Just because I hedge my bets and *can* work overseas in case the whole United States of Obama thing doesn’t work out doesn’t mean I *want* to work overseas.

PS PS

One of my Uncles was the Chief Pilot for Cummins for like 30 years. He gave me my first tour of a Sabreliner in Columbus, a jet I fell in love with and ended up flying years later!

He flew Mr. Miller all over the world. Unlike some Free Traitors, Miller was well known as a committed American philanthropist and was the man behind all the community improvements that Cummins Diesel did for Columbus, Indiana by founding the Columbus Foundation.

You can read about Irwin Miller here: J Irwin Miller

They don't have people like that there anymore. Just a few malignant narcissists determined to line their own pockets at the workers expense.

See? The name calling goes both ways.

In post 67 you have five industries with @ 3/4 trillion dollars of exports. Seems kinda high.

Nope. The U.S. is still an export powerhouse. Source is the US Department of Commerce, and is consistent with pre-Obama numbers and trends.

It’s just that production has mostly left the Rust Belt for places South - like Texas.

“Seems like that job could be automated, given today's technology.”

Never happen, the longshoremen couldn’t steal their 10% of the cargo!!

I remember years ago when containers first came in, the longshoremen went n strike because they were being denied their 10%.

After it was all settled, they just started ripping off whole containers.

When they were hand unloading I used to dive for an insurance company recovering cargo that had been “accidentally” dropped for later recovery, such as 100 cases of booze.

Longshoremen are as corrupt and rotten as the mafia.

You’d think somebody would have trained a couple thousand non-union crane operators by now. They’ve been pulling this stunt for decades.

Just admit it, you defend the union slugs because you’re a bathroom attendant on the docks, and the union slugs give you lots of tips. SanFranSissyco, right?

I think the employers should fire them all

But we both know they'll hire Obama's illegal aliens and pay them under the table less than minimum wage.

Funny thing about that - American families can’t eat schadenfreude. Sure, Chinese unemployment could be worse (but likely they’ll just reroute, seeing as how China doesn’t respect contract law anyway). American firms may not have that option.

And again - Obama’s killed off a lot of companies and opportunities, so a lot of American companies are stuck with export sales or next to nothing - there’s nobody here in the US to buy their goods. Again, how does killing American company sales of American products that are built by Americans advance our country?

Free traitors use manufacturing layoffs in the USA defending a union strike port closure, how ironic( and disingenuous) is that? It’s like Hitler defending concentration camps because the makers of Zyklon B need jobs. We have a 1/4 Trillion dollar annual trade deficit so who is the real loser? Gee Walmart may need to find a USA manufacturer for their junk, what a shame.

The lie is the main tool of the Free Traitor. They lie about the benefits of “Free trade” and see no down side, like the other side doesn’t even have a legitimate position. Kind of like liberals in that sense, “climate deniers” and “free trade” deniers are the same.

Who said I was a ‘free trader’? I’m just pointing out that the union idiots are screwing American companies, manufacturing products here in the US, trying to sell their products abroad (when they can’t here thanks to Obama). Many of them are selling to places we don’t have free trade agreements with in the first place so they’re already facing an uphill fight in those markets.

Also, how does blocking our exports go any way to FIXING our trade deficit?

Dunno if you noticed, but a lot of the generic plastic stuff at Walmart has been made in the USA for the past decade, specifically the Sterilite brand competing against Rubbermaid at a lower price point. Rubbermaid is all made in China, Sterilite is made in USA.
