To Kill a Mockingbird' will not be the reclusive author Harper Lee's only published book after all.
Publisher Harper announced Tuesday that 'Go Set a Watchman,' a novel the Pulitzer Prize-winning author completed in the 1950s and put aside, will be released July 14.
Rediscovered last fall, 'Go Set a Watchman' is essentially a sequel to 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' although it was finished earlier.
The 304-page book will be Lee's second, and the first new work in more than 50 years.
The publisher plans a first printing of 2 million copies.
'In the mid-1950s, I completed a novel called 'Go Set a Watchman,'' the 88-year-old Lee said in a statement issued by Harper. 'It features the character known as Scout as an adult woman, and I thought it a pretty decent effort. My editor, who was taken by the flashbacks to Scout's childhood, persuaded me to write a novel (what became 'To Kill a Mockingbird') from the point of view of the young Scout.
'I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told. I hadn't realized it (the original book) had survived, so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it.

Very cool. Will be interesting to see if the original writing style survived into Mockingbird.

I figured the sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird” would be “Dressing and Stuffing Your Mockingbird”

“Return of the Mockingbird”, to be followed by yet another sequel, “The Mockingbird Strikes Back”.

It’ll be interesting to see the “hook” she uses. The original used racism back when racism was an issue. I don’t think she’d get much traction on the subject of “reverse discrimination”, as that’s about the only racism extant today.

If you read the article, you'll see that this "sequel" was actually her original submission, and that the publisher thought the story of Scout as a young girl (told in flashback in the new novel) was the more interesting storyline, and asked Harper Lee to develop her book around Scout's childhood.
I expect the tone will be very similar, considering that they were written around the same time, and fully expect the new novel to focus on Scout's maturing views on racism as a young adult.

Actually, To Kill A Mockingbird was a prequel. This previously unpublished work was written first.

Didn't Hemmingway or some other notable author toss a manuscript off of a ship (cruise?) and go on to write a much better work?
Perhaps the "background" understanding of the characters (and as a first time writer, dealing with story arcs, dialogue, editing, and more concerns) led to a better debut work.
