Dr. Rand Paul: Vaccines Can Lead to 'Mental Disorders'
NBC News ^ | 02/02/2015

Posted on 02/02/2015 4:21:34 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Republican Sen. Rand Paul is standing by his statement that most vaccinations should be "voluntary," telling CNBC that a parent's choice not to vaccinate a child is "an issue of freedom."

In an interview with the network Monday, Paul said that vaccines are "a good thing" but that parents "should have some input" into whether or not their children must get them.

And he gave credence to the idea - disputed by the majority of the scientific community - that vaccination can lead to mental disabilities.

"I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines," he said.

I love how you can develop these symptoms AFTER STOPPING CHANTIX, and the first thing you should do if that happens is “stop taking CHANTIX right away.”

Hello?

No medicine, vaccine, drug, or substance is good for everyone. Some very few may be harmful for everyone.

I, for example, have a horribly bad reaction to aspartame. Most people don’t. About 1 percent of the populace have this condition. For the other 99 percent, it’s fine.

This is true (with varying numbers) for just about every foodstuff, medicine, vaccine, drug, or substance I have ever heard of.

You know your kid much better than the government does.

>> infants are susceptible <<

Ditto for pregnant women. And ditto for some people who are taking immuno-suppressant drugs or whose immune systems are otherwise compromised.

>> every vaccine carries a risk of complication and side effect <<

Of course. Any well-informed person knows that.

But the statistics are something like the following:

One out of about every 500,000 children who receive the measles vaccine will suffer death or brain damage as a result.

But on the other hand, one out of about every 1000 children who get measles will suffer death or brain damage.

Do you want your child to be one in 500,000? Or one in 1000?

Of course. And that’s exactly why everybody else should be vaccinated, in order to protect these vulnerable people.

Many in the anti-vaccine community are not against vaccines for the reasons you think. For example, they are for the European measles vaccine, European mumps vaccine and the European Rubella vaccine. These do not have the same correlation with autism. They are just against the 3 in one American MMR vaccine which has a high correlation.

They also have problems with the preservative Thimerosol, which is banned in many other countries. The FDA now advises against its use in the US. It has slowly been replaced. It is only being currently used in multi-dose packages of certain vaccines and flu shots. The slightly more expensive single dose packs do not contain thimerosol.

Alot of it boils down to manufacturing methods and corporate profits.

I know the parents of a couple autistic kids. Kids who were normal until vaccinations. They are very bitter about this. Bitter is not a good word....

One out of about every 500,000 children who receive the measles vaccine will suffer death or brain damage as a result. But on the other hand, one out of about every 1000 children who get measles will suffer death or brain damage.

The measles vaccine is actually the MMR vaccine. Have the risk factors for the mumps and rubella vaccines been added in? And if there are multiple doses of MMR required, does the risk increase?

Now let's assume your numbers are accurate. If you get the shot, you are inducting yourself into the 1 in 500,000 pool. If you don't get the shot, you still may not get measles, in which case your odds are not actually 1 in 1000 but zero.

Also, these statistics are only good for general assessments. If you know or suspect your child has risk factors one way or the other, that will have to factor into the decision.

And this is why I insist that parents have to make the decisions and not the state. You can quote statistics left and right, but if you're a parent who's been talked into something against your better judgment and your kid suffers because of it, what could possibly give you solace? "We took one for the team?"

Really? Sounds like you’ve been spending too much time in your lazyboy, surfing those fruitcake vaccine conspiracy theory websites.

That stuff’s no good for you, brother. Rots your brain.

“aren’t they immune to catching measles from a non vaccinated child? Isn’t that the purpose of the vaccination?”

There is no 100% immunity, so I would not want any un-vaccinated diseased child near mine, despite my vaccinated child having pretty good immunity to the diseases.

I an not anti vaccine. But anyone thinking that they don't carry risk are not looking at evidences that say otherwise. The MMR vaccine is one that those of us over 50 likely never took. Back in the 1960's and early to mid 1970's Autism was a rarity. Personally I don't think Combo Vaccines are wise and I simply think all vaccines should be spaced out so as to where ones autoimmune system isn't suddenly bombarded with the shots. Can any medical professionals in FR explain to me why the MMR vaccine can not instead be three different vaccines which are spread out?

Any shot can pose a danger of adverse reaction that did not happen before. Just ask an Allergy Doctor. You take a vaccine which is autoimmune in nature BTW and you will sit there 20 minutes in case you go into shock.

The Swine Flu Shots of the mid 1970's were a good idea. But truth is it also put some who took it into wheelchairs for life. Transverse Myelitis is another disorder linked to possible vaccines including possibly MMR and that is according to MAYO. These are seriously disabling and in some cases fatal disorders. I do believe the COMBO Vaccines need to stop if nothing more than a "Hey lets see if this cuts down on unexplainable disorders" experiment. I'm not saying no vaccine I'm saying No Combo vaccines especially in kids.

In my family I have two cousins now at about age 40 or so and are siblings. Both of them by the time they were 5 had some unexplainable form of muscle degeneration hit them. No prior history of that on either side of their family.

COMBO vaccines are pushed for economics of it and getting a three in one shot. But at what cost when the same objective can be achieved by a more spread out program?

Some posters know my wife is a quadriplegic. It happened 30 years ago in a Knoxville mall. One of the first questions the neurologist kept asking us was about any recent vaccines. The Neurologist wasn't a kook he is among the best in the state and is a teaching professor now as well.

If one kid in the family has a believed reaction to a vaccine then why risk the future of the second child? Should a parent in such cases have a right to say NO? Yea I think so. Measles and Chicken Pox were common when I was a kid. The family across the street with nine kids all had Whooping Cough and all lived. There has to be a balance somewhere.

That said yes I take a yearly Flu shot and I also take three shots every three weeks and six shots every six weeks for allergies. Those shots have risk. The sign on the door saying all patients must wait in waiting room twenty minutes after shots before leaving tells me that.

BTW for the record in the early 1970’s I knew just about every Autistic kid in a six county area that included to fairly large cities. There were maybe two dozen possibly three dozen Autistic students tops in that area. Autism was not the prevailing disorder in the special education/physical rehabilitation school I attended. CP, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Bifida, and some older students post Polio were the most common. The rest varied in reasons for being there such as deafness, sight issues, dwarfism, kids with missing limbs from a drug placed on the market to prevent miscarriages, you name it. ADD ADHD wasn’t an epidemic either nor it’s close Mimicker C.A.P.D. That would have been in 1970-71. What changed the equation on Autism and maybe even ADD ADHD? MMR shots starting in 1971?

Paul is dead to me. Vaccination quackery is a bellwether for kookiness.

Thank god Walker and Carson aren't cranks on this.

>>Paul is dead to me. Vaccination quackery is a bellwether for kookiness.<<

So, to be clear, you think the government should be able to vaccinate everyone for anything the government wants, anytime? Because that’s the alternative to personal responsibility.

And you don’t get to pick the particular vaccination either. Once the majority rules, you and your kids are going to get it, regardless.

Seems like a monumental abdication of personal responsibility to me. Good luck finding a GOP candidate who comes down on the side of mandatory vaccinations. It’s easy to blame a measles outbreak on “dumb parenting,” but governments, once given the power to decide for us, won’t limit those decisions only to the most rational ones.

So Paul addressed the issue rationally, but he’s a quack for doing so? Interesting.

Actually, Christie (of all people) articulated your points much better. Paul on the other hand regurgitated debunked claims of vaccines causing mental illness, which shows he has a problem judging fact from fiction.

I don't think anyone is talking about forced, or "mandatory" vaccinations in the way you're positioning it; what we're talking about is requiring them for public school.
