Biggest corporate lay-off in history is expected within days, with IBM believed to be scrapping 110,000 of its 430,000 workforce around the world
IBM is preparing to scrap 110,000 of its global 430,000 workforce in the biggest corporate cull in the computer giant's history, a report has revealed.
The company will make the job cuts this week under a plan known internally as 'project chrome', according to US technology blogger Robert Cringely on Forbes website.
IBM is in the process of layoffs, as disclosed in its latest earnings report last week but said the number of job losses was significantly fewer than had been claimed.

In this era of crystal clear (usually) voice communications from nearly one end of the earth to the other, why just about every drive through intercom sounds like bad drive in movie audio?
That’s a lot of software engineers and call centers support going overseas.
Bingo. Still gets the job done, it has never crashed on me. I have a workaround for the later Windows when dos interferes with its running. Let me know if you need that. Freep on!
Is that the PS2?
I had one of those in 1989. It retailed for $4100, but I got a university discount. Paid $2500, software included and an extra large 40MB hard disk. I also upgraded to 1 MB RAM, the most you could get. It had one wait cycle.
It was a WWII tank. Incredibly slow, quickly outdated, but indestructible.
That's a good question. Let me know when you get the answer ;-)
If you’re old enough to remember drive-in movies you’ll know that all those cheap tinny speakers had to go somewhere.
Oh, Praise the Lord, and thank you, my dearest for telling me!
I’m so happy for you, mylife.
YOU are most deserving!
God bless and keep you, my dear, sweet pal.
XOXOXO
The last drive in movie I remember going to was Blues Brothers.
It would explain a lot. Sounds like conspiracy of some kind. Better call in The Question.

Ouch! All those great Blues Brothers tunes pumped through a drive-in speaker.
This is a terrible thing for those 100,000 people and their many family who depend on that income. :-(
I was only 8 or 9 when it came out, it was cold and the Monte Carlo my parents had heater was weak or out. I remember the cold to this day.
Same here and they are slowly being migrated to something else. Glad it isn’t my job.
40% plus of IBMers are now in India.
Anyone want to take a wager where the bulk of the layoffs will occur?
This is terrible news for everybody.
Thank you, I hope you have weathered your transition well.
I may miss yall this June, I have several commitments in short turn.
I’ve Been Mothballed
The country obama just visited and praised?
My wife works with pivot tables all the time.
Me? I can sum a column of numbers.
:)
Blame it on Global Warming or Bush maybe?
Seriesly (sp), the CEO of Mickey D's is living in the twentieth century. He needs to go Undercover Boss and discover the real world out there. The equipment sucks, English challenged employees suck, food quality and ingredients suck, sanitation sucks, employee loyalty sucks, and oh, and did I mention Mickey D's sucks.
Same for IBM and it's foreign under qualified H-1B cheaper by the dozen employees.
