Defense Spending: The venerable A-10 Warthog, designed to stop Soviet tanks, and the perfect weapon to "degrade and destroy" the Islamic State, as President Obama promised, faces a budgetary chopping block.
We have noted the irony of how Obama was going to war against the Islamic State with weapons systems he had scrapped, ending the production runs of the F-22 Raptor and Tomahawk cruise missiles. They were dismissed by the administration as relics of the Cold War even as Russia was rearming and trying to reassemble the old Soviet Union.
We've also mentioned the phasing out of the A-10 Thunderbolt, a close-support aircraft that entered service in 1972 and was designed to combat Soviet tank formations on a European battlefield.
Dubbed the "Warthog" because of its decidedly un-sleek profile, the A-10 has been found to be useful in another capacity in Iraq — attacking IS forces that don't want to be on the business end of the Warthog's 30 mm

So true. It’s been an embarassment because nobody predicted how viciously effective it is and has been.
Israel should offer to take them all if this (the 4th or 5th article on this, lately) is really true. What a deal. That, too, would be a serious disappointment because the A-10’s in theater would not have to be brought back home at a transport cost of several million and some other grifter would miss out. Bet they could use ‘em to max advantage.
Well, there may be on upside.
At least they won’t have the A-10 to use against U.S. citizens, should the “winds shift in an ugly direction”.
They don’t need to scrap them...Any country in the world would pay top dollar for them...
Disarming us for the sake of our enemies is starting to feel intentional...
I have said it here more than once, Let the Israeli's buy the F117a's B-1's and the now the Wart-Hogs for One Dollar a piece and let them develop their own upgrades...

The A-10 is being scrapped because the Air Force hates the CAS mission. They want nothing to do with it. This is not the 1st time the A-10 has been on the chopping block. The Air Force wanted it gone before the first Gulf War. Unfortunately for them it more than proved it’s worth and Congress told them to pack sand. Don’t bet on the A-10 being cut. The Army and Marine Corps both want it around, and are screaming bloody murder over this. Sen McCain is also fighting this very hard. I don’t see Congress approving this.
Israel would be a perfect home. A gift from GOD, himself.
If the Air Force is willing to spend some money to scrap the A-10, I’m sure the Marines will be more than glad to take them off the Air Forces’ hands.

Israel would get 20 more years out of those beasts. Just think, they have all(?) just been freshly rewinged and re-electronic’ed. The Israelis would probably figure out a way to launch drones from under the wings, over and above all the lethal stuff that can be launched from the existing hardpoints. And, they would probably train squadrons of female pilots just to screw with the so-called minds of the Islamists.

The saga of the A-10. Reminds me of a comment I heard. The only way you can lose a Government Job. Is if you are really doing a good Job!

While they’re at it, they need to scrap the hammer, because it’s an old design.
The Air Force higher ups should be told. Scrape the A-10 and Congress will give it to the ARMY (lock, stock, and barrel). Heads will spin on that!
How else are we going to manage to buy another year worth of food stamps for 58 million people?
There is no way any Hog pilot would ever make a run on American citizens if the “winds shift in an ugly direction.”
If obama ever made that treasonous call, all that would be flying that jet, and rather poorly I might add, would be the butt-kissing generals.
And the maintenance guys would never service a Hog to be used against American citizens.
Back in the day. . .pre-Gulf War I.
After, not so much.
(And don't forget the USAF had guys on the ground as well).
