An Inclusive French Republic, Paris Attacks Lay Bare Longtime Muslim Exclusion
New York Times ^ | January 19, 2015 | By THE EDITORIAL BOARD

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris prompted millions to take to the streets to show national solidarity and to pay tribute to the 17 people murdered. The attacks have also inspired a lot of soul-searching, as the French struggle to understand how three men, born and raised in France, could have trained the murderous intent of Al Qaeda and the Islamic State on their own countrymen.

Prison was the crucible of their radicalization. There are five million to six million Muslims in France, less than 10 percent of the total population, but 60 percent of France’s prison inmates are of “Muslim culture or religion". To stem recruiting by Islamist extremists in prisons, the government has announced it will seek to isolate identified Islamist proselytizers from other prisoners.

There is also the problem of France’s secularism. A ban on head scarves in public schools and on full-face veils feels to many Muslims like an unfair constraint on their religious freedom. Some also find it hard to accept that blasphemy is not a crime in France, and that Charlie Hebdo and other publications have a right to satirize religious leaders.

French Muslims, who are as scared of terrorists as everybody else, also have to fear anti-Islam prejudice and attacks. There were 60 recorded threats and attacks against Muslims during the six days following the Jan. 7 attack on Charlie Hebdo. There is a real danger the right-wing National Front will seek political advantage by fueling anti-Muslim hysteria.

France’s minister of education, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who is French-Moroccan, is to announce new measures on Monday to better explain French “republican values” in the schools. For the lesson to work, the Hollande government must find ways to make those values a reality for the many French youths who feel marginalized from French society.

They make it sound like muslims are the victims rather than being prone to being criminals and victimizers. This on the heels of muslims slaughtering 17 unarmed innocents.

The filthy muzzies hate bans on chattelwear for their women, yet demand the government ban pork, ban Jews, ban anything Christian, ban free speech...

Hijabs are offensive.

Maybe, but certainly burqas are.

For me, the issue is concealment of identity. Burqas, masks and droopy hoodies are for Halloween parties, not public social interaction. Hijab--not so bad (except for what comes with it)--more like a kerchief used in many Eastern European settings.

Oh, by all means, let's try to understand these 7th century throwbacks.

Didn't most of them go to school in France? Did they get graded on their tests?

Or is France failing to teach anything whatsoever about their system of laws? They'd better get to it, and throw those who fail to understand and accept it directly out of the country onto their burqa-padded tushes.

They got their marching orders from obamugabe - it’s all the fault of the French. That is, unless its the fault of the USA...

Really amazing.

The NY Times laments France’s “secularism”—and pinpoints freedom of speech and freedom of the press issues among three examples of the problem.

LOL. Any bets on whether we're going to be as sympathetic to Christians who take far more mainstream positions?

How about "Some [Christians] also find it hard to accept that judges can force the country to accept homosexual marriage even though it repeatedly has been voted down by most state legislatures." Nah, doesn't sound right for the NYT.

Sorry, I don't think the problem is that the Muslims just don't understand about your European value system. This is not just another "teaching moment".

They want to drive you out of your own country, and you've been hoping against hope that they will have an epiphany which will cause them to stop burning your parked cars, raping your women and plotting your mass murder.

They won't. They want to make you a slave in your own country.

You will NEVER turn them into cheese-eating surrender monkeys. Arm yourselves and grow some balls, or go get measured for your coffin.

It is the Muslims who exclude themselves, the French have bent over backwards to try to accommodate them.

Wow, the left loves France's secularism except when it comes to muslims then its a problem.

Looks like the islamist supremacists have won as they have made the left submit to islam.
