Billy Crystal: 'Stop shoving gay sex scenes in my face'
The Independent via Craving Entertainment ^ | Monday 19 January 2015 | Helen Nianias

Hoooo boy. Billy Crystal has angered plenty with some poorly-worded statements he made about the portrayal of gay sex scenes on television. According to The Independent, during a panel on the Television Critics Association this weekend promoting his upcoming FX series The Comedians, Crystal said he can do without all the gratuitous P-in-the-B scenes that TV keeps shoving in his face:

Speaking during a panel interview in Pasadena, the actor said: “Sometimes I think: ‘Ah that’s too much for me’.

“Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I’m not going to reveal to you which ones they are. I hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face to the point where it feels like an every-day kind of thing,” Crystal added.

And I respect your right not to watch them-I’m an adult, and I’m not entertained by something that is always fit for kids’ eyes, be it written, on the internet or on TV, and I don’t believe in censorship-we might as well “allow” book burnings-that is what communist countries do-not free countries. Straight sex in a storyline is fine with me-in real life, the camera doesn’t cut away to music, clouds and the next scene as soon as a couple starts kissing and touching.

There are plenty of channels available with DirecTV that are G-rated for people with young children and who don’t like lovemaking scenes-that is the beauty of having all those channels-to each their own choice, and I will respect that choice even if I think it sucks-liberty is when we don’t force our choices on others, right?

It does seem that there really are powers that be, trying to shape society.

In the 1970s, black people were inserted into every show or ad. It’s great not to have a Lily White Television World. But it was just so cheesy. It was still Lily White World, with the one black guy standing by. I was a child, and I even thought it was ridiculous and unnatural. And on TV shows, black people were always the good guys, ALWAYS, to the point of ruining plots (because you knew beforehand the black guy couldn’t have done it).

And now it isn’t just gay people nearby. You have to familiarize yourself with their sex acts. The agenda used to be just the same rights everyone else has. Now it’s getting generations used to private acts done on TV in our faces. Which we didn’t want in normal programming for anyone, ever. Broadcast media is trying to change civilization, and they do have the power to do so, clearly.

There doesn’t seem to be any way around the media. Sure, YOU can choose to turn it off. Doesn’t help. You made a few kids and a bunch of grandkids, but that is it. The rest of the country has these shows on, and they are following the Media as they Pipe Our Children into accepting ANYTHING, good or harmful.

Very well said-the last time I watched network TV, it was local news, to check on the winter storm warnings in my area.

If the FCC were competent enough to exist, the most risqué show they allowed on network-other than the news shows-would be Dancing With the Stars. And no way any homosexuality or other controversial thing even hinted at-no politics, either-that would be real fairness in broadcasting. You want something else, buy satellite or cable TV...

I like Vikings because it is as historically correct as the records for that time provide. If it were a Hollywood production, I’m sure there would be a homosexual warrior named Sven-thankfully, because it is produced by Brits and Canadians, with mostly Brit and Canadian actors, our sensibilities won’t be assaulted-Brit productions are far more into historical accuracy then we are, and in macho Viking society, guy-on-guy stuff would get both guys publicly executed in some slow, terrible way...

As it should be, and liberals need to learn that freedom and liberty don’t mean everyone does what they want them to.

My husband and I got cable as soon as it was available, years ago so we would have better educational stuff than network and PBS for our then-small kid to watch, and real stuff for grown-ups to see after her bedtime-we pretty much quit watching network but for local news. We switched to satTV as soon as it was cheaper, and I’ve had it ever since.

Ragna is great. I like Viking history anyway and after watching the show I started to read more about it and yes indeed you are correct. They have it spot on and I ma looking forward to watching it start up soon . You are right too about if it were Hollywood they would put in a homosexual guy because they can't help themselves. Any idea when the show starts up again Texan?

I love to watch historical series and shows that are Brit produced-they are a bit more untidy with the language, sex and violence, but it is a more accurate portrayal of the times-things weren’t tidy, romantic and nice-did you watch the 3 seasons of the BBC series “The Tudors”? Or “Rome” on HBO?

Vikings starts around February 14th-they are just starting to advertise it on History and H2.

Missed the Tudors but did watch Rome.
I heard they stopped making it because it cost too much.

I read that, too-it was a joint venture of BBC and an American company, which is guaranteed to drive the cost way out of reason-Brit production companies don’t spend like that-for one thing, their TV actors don’t get paid like the ones here-according to my Brit neighbor-a lot of them even have other jobs when they don’t have an acting gig.

The BBC is a spendaholic. They will send many times the number of crew to get a story and stay in posh hotels overseas.

Yes, and they often let their kids sit and watch this perversion, then wonder why they wind up twisted inside out.

And the stupid voting it isn’t just in presidential elections. They continue voting for the same idiot congressmen, election after election.

That may be true, but in this particular case it was said to have been HBO that didn’t want to use stages, green screens, etc and ran the location budget over-so the luxury factor seems to have been a problem. Pity-it was a reasonably realistic portrayal of history-liberties were taken with the historical characters, but HBO does that all the time.

We like to watch the Brit series too on Netflix because the acting is good and the writing for them is much better and you are correct. Many actors over there do not get paid the same high wages as they do here.
Plus over there they don’t have the women looking like they are ready for a cocktail dinner first thing in the morning.

We just finished watching Broadchurch which had none of the homosexuality, and was more of a family crime who did it.

If you have DirectTV, you get BBCA as part of most packages free-Musketeers, Dr. Who and all-the aforementioned Brit neighbor got me into it.
