MANILA Pope Francis waded into the global debate on climate change and the environment on Sunday, saying in the text of a speech that man was destroying nature and betraying God's calling to be stewards of creation.
Francis offered his thoughts about the environment and climate change for the second time in four days at a rally with young people at a Manila university on the last full day of a week-long Asian tour that has taken him to Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
He did not read all of a speech prepared for delivery at the university, improvising after he was moved by the story of an abandoned girl. When he does this, the Vatican says the prepared text is official.
"As stewards of Gods creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we
betray that noble calling," he said in the text.
Another line he read to the crowd noted that "this country, more than many others, is likely to be seriously affected by climate change".

The rock star pope strikes again.
?!?!
Is that real? WTF!
Is it made of bones?
Listen to women more, don't be macho, Pope tells men
"Women have much to tell us in today's society. At times we men are too 'machista'," he said, using the Spanish term for male chauvinists."
If the Pope would start referencing Scriptures like Jesus did to justify some of his statements, then his statements would probably be less controversial.
Regarding Gods commands for stewardship of land, please note passages like Leviticus 25:4-5.
I wouldn’t have any problem with just the title, but the details are dangerous.
We know that combating this fiction we call man-made global warming will hurt the poorest on earth and elevate the environment over humans who were made in God’s image.
Yes, but that photo was take prior to his visit to Manila.
This goes along with the really bad statements about how its bad to say things that aren’t nice about someone’s religion and if you do you should expect to be punched.
HE - THE POPE - is SUPPOSED to be the man who GOD has here to get people to become followers of Christianity and HE is says that people shouldn’t say bad things about other religions?
Doesn’t Jesus say MANY bad things about other religions and not to follow them because they are false profits?
This Pope is a complete Idiot who doesn’t even understand what he’s been put there to do.
I’ve heard more positive comments about this guy from agnostics than about any other pope.
And I don’t think that’s a good thing.
Exactly. See post #25 regarding his comments today about "male chauvinists."
Why should he really care about Scripture? He can be a law unto himself.
It seems that “papal text” has little relation with what’s in the Bible.
I think I know why.
Pope Francis assures atheists: You dont have to believe in God to go to heaven
It’s one thing to disagree with certain environmental policies or to question global warming, it’s another to assert that man has a right to wantonly destroy or pollute the environment. Are you asserting the latter?
Probably not real ones.
Nope. Pope Francis is the real deal. He's a Jesuit!
Many think Jesuits are conservative because they know how to pronounce "nuclear" and wear long black cassocks. (I thought this was gonna be really interesting! It might be another 2000 years before they elect the next Jesuit!)
That throne looks like H.R. Giger designed it.
Maybe, perhaps as an afterthought the Pope might want to mention Christian persecution, millions dead by abortion, acceptance of perversion, fighting Islamic jihad, etc. I’m glad I stopped going to church decades ago.
it’s funner to bellyache... even if calling the pope some kind of spiritual brother to charles manson (i didn’t know till now he was an environut).
seriously, by the time we get a glimpse of what is happening in the vatican, it has gone through a lot of different lenses and we don’t know what they are.
That is akin to asserting that someone who opposes Affirmative Action automatically supports racism.
