MSNBC host and civil rights activist Al Sharpton is calling for an emergency meeting of his eight-member diversity task force to discuss action against the Academy Awards after the movie Selma received only one Oscars nomination.
The movie industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher you get, the whiter it gets, Sharpton said with usual flair in a statement released Thursday after the announcement of Oscar nominations.
Many, including Sharpton, were outraged that none of the actors in Selma, a movie about the 1965 Voting Rights Act, were nominated for the golden statues.
David Oyelowo, who portrayed Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the movie, did not receive a nomination. Nor did director Ava DuVernay.
This was the second time since 2000 that no black actors or actresses were nominated for an Oscar.
The lack of diversity in todays Oscar nominations is appalling and while it is good that Selma was nominated for Best Picture, its ironic that they nominated a story about the racial shutout around voting while there is a racial shutout around the Oscar nominations, Sharpton continued in his statement.
I have called an emergency meeting early next week in Hollywood with the task force to discuss possible action around the Academy Awards.
I have called an emergency meeting early next week in Hollywood with the task force to discuss possible action around the Academy Awards.
Sharpton formed the task force last month after the hack and release of racially-themed emails sent between Sony Pictures executives. Sharpton called on Sony head Amy Pascal to address the issue of Hollywoods lack of diversity.
In the time of Staten Island and Ferguson, to have one of the most shutout Oscar nights in recent memory is something that is incongruous, Sharpton told The New York Daily News on Thursday.
Sharptons outrage comes a year after the success of 12 Years a Slave, which was based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was captured and sold into slavery in the 1840s. The movie won Best Picture, and actress Lupita Nyongo won the award for Best Supporting Actress. Steve McQueen and Chiwetel Ejiofor were nominated for Best Director and Best Actor, respectively.
But I thought they were a shoo-in for the “Most Exploitive Overuse of Racist Rhetoric To Inflame Liberal Viewers” Oscar.
Yep. As long as the collective ‘we’ act like cowards there will be Al Sharptons.
This guy is a MORON. Why doesn’t anyone care anymore what he thinks exception being OZero.
Didn’t “Twelve Years a Slave” get a bunch of awards even though the judges admitted they didn’t watch the film? Al wants his affirmative action Oscar. I am surprised Selma didn’t get any awards actually. It is so PC to fawn over anything black and especially St. Michael King.
Hollywood's probably the last industry he hasn't been able to pimp and hustle........
“But I thought they were a shoo-in for the Most Exploitive Overuse of Racist Rhetoric To Inflame Liberal Viewers Oscar.”
They had a special “Oscar” for the occasion; his hands are up and inscribed: “Black Films Matter”
“Besides, the Academy Awards are for movies no one has seen or cares about it.”
I have posted it here on FreeRepublic before, so here goes again:
Everyone who believes in freedom should see The Kings Speech - It won the best picture award just a few years ago. It’s about Queen Elizabeth’s Father, his speech impediment, and the buildup to WWII -— And his speech therapist. A miraculous film (NOT made by Hollywood!).
Also, there was a wonderful film that won the best film academy award the following year (again NOT a Hollywood film) called ‘The Artist.’ It’s a wonderful tear-jerker. Wonderful!
It’s set in the era of the transition from silent film to ‘talkies.’ A famous actor is/has lost his ability to get good roles - invests EVERYTHING he has on a failed film and someone helps him. The film is black and white (the black part is approved by Al Sharpton!) and filmed in 4:3.
4:3! Can you believe that in this day of CGI that a 4:3 film won best picture?
The Academy, on occasion, selects GREAT films.
Peace.
Lots of the Race-baiters invested big in making this movie.
Al sees an opportunity to extort some Hollywood payoff-to-go-away money, and he isn’t going to miss the chance.
He wants an award for that totally inaccurate film?
The Movie was supposed to gin up “Black Pride” and political outrage, helping to kick-off Hillary’s 2016 campaign.
OOPS...
If Sharpton has his shorts in a knot then I guess I’ll have to watch the Oscars this year.
I am so happy. I hope Oprah is upset too!
The giant sucking sound you heard was the premier of Oprah’s crappy flick.
LMWAO
Just because Chris Dribble Mouth Mathews sez he liked the movie doe not mean it did not suck. The movie sucked get over it
“Grand Hotel Budapest” is just going to walk away with it, this year. It is a GREAT movie, and the cinematics are awesome.
Even Hollywood is sick of the race-baiting crap, it seems.
Just a guess, mind you, but in this era of carte blanche for blacks; I’d guess that the Academy tried every angle they could to find grounds for giving Selma some recognition, but couldn’t justify it. This IS Hollywood, folks.
I wonder if the academy will cave and give it the Best Picture to avoid being raciss.
