New York State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, known for showing her claws against animal cruelty, is pouncing on a new topic: cat declawing.
Rosenthal, who represents district 67, mainly covering Manhattan's Upper West Side, has penned a bill that would ban removing cats' claws unless necessary for medical reasons, the New York Daily News reports.
The bill has not yet been introduced to the state Senate, but it has been backed by the Humane Society of New York.
"Too often, people think that declawing is a simple surgery that removes a cat's nailsthe equivalent of having your fingernails trimmed. Sadly, this is far from the truth," the Humane Society says on its website. "Declawing traditionally involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle."
The Paw Project, a non-profit dedicated to educating the public about the effects of declawing, is also behind it. The group has successfully led campaigns to make declawing illegal in cities across California, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in 2014 helped get a law in Rhode Island enacted to prohibit landlords from requiring tenants to declaw their pets.
If Rosenthal's bill is enacted, New York would be the first in the country to introduce a state-wide ban on the practice.
Rosenthal's previous efforts include fighting to extend orders of protection to domestic animals and limiting cosmetic testing on animals. Just last month, her bill banning pet tattoos and piercings was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
I bet FReepers have no opinion, really.

Over to you! :) =^..^=
Priorities. First things first!
I prefect a declawed cat. Certainly it is an overreach to outlaw the practice.
People who declaw an animal would probably find abortion OK too.
I don’t see that it’s much worse than yanking a piglet’s testicles off with a pair of pliers.
Where do you find a prefect that’ll declaw a cat? In what Japanese prefecture will you find them?
Cat declawing bill could outlaw practice across New York State Priorities. First things first! |
Do you mean we should outlaw New York State?
If so, I heartily agree.
Well I would like to have sued my kitty for the vandalism she did to my leather couch. Since I was her only resource, it seemed like declawing beat a death sentence at the pound.
How about grooming? Very unnatural.
Most vets around me refuse to declaw, and I believe the EU already has such a stupid law.
I know damned well what declawing is, yes, its taking off the last knuckle of the cats toes... and frankly, the cat gives up the tips of its toes to live a comfortable, lazy, cared for life in my home... I will not have my things destroyed because a cat is going to be a cat and like it or not claw things or scratch people.
It is not cruel, it is not mean, and you ban it, you will wind up with a lot more feral cats running around because folks who would be willing to adopt one, like myself, will instead refuse to.
It is probably me, but I do not understand the question.
I have adopted declawed cats. I have had a vet declaw kitties twice. It is not that big of a deal. You do it when they are 6 months old and only the front claws.
I poo poo’d the idea of outlawing de-clawing.
I declawed my cat and he was never the same. After the operation, they cut the “finger” at the knuckle to get rid of the claw ... he never held his paws the way they should have held them. He held them limp ... like he had lost his “cat capabilities”.
My chihuahua picked on him endlessly until he died.
Others may declaw .... I NEVER would again.
Agreed. We at first planned to not declaw our cat. For the first 1-2 years, we put caps on her toenails. However, she was still clawing through the wood frames on the door to the porch, as well as furniture, etc. We had her front paws declawed. She still loves us.
I understand the leather couch problem. I HAD to declaw Herb Cat decades ago when our apartment would only accept declawed cats. It really didn’t seem to bother him or slow him down one bit. He went on to murder more birds than any other cat in his 19-year lifetime.
My present cat man has claws and I won’t remove them. Period. He wrecked two chair I liked a lot, but oh well. I discovered that he does not claw microfiber furniture, so that’s what I have and will continue to purchase.
