Married homes least likely to be violent: study
Washington Times ^ | 1-7-15 | Cheryl Wetzstein

Children living in unwed-mother homes are more likely to witness domestic violence than children growing up with their married mother and father, says a new analysis.

The finding is counterintuitive since mothers who have never married would appear to be less likely to get into fights at home with someone.

However, data show that the rate of witnessing domestic violence among children living with never-married mothers was 116 children per 1,000, “six times higher than the rate for children in intact families,” said psychologist Nicholas Zill, who published his findings at the Institute for Family Studies in Charlottesville, Va., in January.

Some of the fights involving single mothers were with their new boyfriends or partners, rather than the children’s fathers, he noted.

These poor children are the victims as their mothers live out their lousy soap opera lives.

That's triple dog face palm.

Not counterintuitive to me...

Counter-intuitive? My parents never hit each other, my grandparents never hit each other. IMHO, most married couples don’t get into physical fights.

OTOH, people in random relationships are more likely to get into fights because they don’t really love or care for their partners.

Where women have made unwise choices I would agree, but there are things out of women’s control too. The unmarried category is problematic obviously.

I have to admit that divorced or remarried figure surprises me. I would think the unmarried number would be worse.

“or other adults in household” is an interesting tidbit.

Way to paint with a broad brush. I know more than a few men and women post divorce who are in very good relationships and living anything but soap opera lives all of which have kids. They probably were not included in this "study" nor would they be, they live normally and with respect.

My brother and I were raised by a widowed mother.

No violence—ever.

Widows were not included in the study for some reason.

They never met my ex-wife.

My 5 yo son would hide all of the kitchen knives whenever she was “out with the girls”.

Once took after me with one of those wire and roller cheese slicers. I guess she thought she was gonna take me down one layer at a time.

Yes. Are there married people who engage in physical violence toward each other? Sure.

But they are a minority. A small minority.

True, but the specific reason is that it's usually about infidelity. Which unmarrieds care about just as much as married folk. Because it matters. But they're not in a secure situation, so they very often don't play by the rules of fidelity. It's a snake-bit arrangement. it's one more little sign that cohabitation is crazy.

My younger sister and I were raised by our widower Dad, a great childhood.

But Dad always loved her best, just damn :-)

Since when is it counterintuitive that tramps who bring men home experience more violence than married women?
