The CIA should be abolished.
After a trial run of 67 years, the agency has proven a sorcerers apprentice. The director and his subordinates have became insufferably arrogant Platonic Guardians hiding behind secrecy in the belief that the rest of us are too stupid or naive to judge what risks to accept to preserve liberty and the rule of law. The CIA has made Americans less safe.
Its incorrigible anti-democratic ethos was epitomized by legendary chief of counterintelligence James J. Angleton. He voiced contempt for the Church Committees investigation of chronic agency abuses, i.e., the Family Jewels. As reported in The New York Times, Angleton likened the CIA to a medieval city occupied by an invading army, i.e., the Congress of the United States. To the same effect, Director William J. Casey told Church Committee investigator Loch K. Johnson that the congressional role was to stay the [expletive] out of my business.
The CIA will never accept that it works for we the people and our representatives in Congress; and, that the United States Constitution and laws govern everything the CIA does. It will never accept accountability for its actions including torture, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killingsbecause it salutes the motto that the ends justify the means, that savagery is justified to defeat perceived savages.
The CIA is unAmerican. It sneers at our nations signature creed that it is better to risk being the victim of injustice than to be complicit in it.
President Harry Truman, father of the CIA in 1947, came to regret his offspring. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, former New York Democrat and former vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, introduced legislation in 1991 and 1995 to abolish the agency. Their views were not misplaced.

During WWII General MacArthur refused to let OSS operate in the Pacific theater because it was filled with communists.
The OSS was the precursor to the CIA.
I didn’t know that.
Also, The director of the CIA, George Tenet, told George W. Bush that Iraq having WMDs were a “slam dunk.” After we went in and the media started questioning Iraq having WMDs, the CIA was no where to be found to support Bush. It seemed almost like a set up to me.
Agreed,
Few know and fully understand how we have evolved the best intelligence services in the world.
A small primer of the major USG intel organizations by intelligence discipline (all under the Executive branch of the triad):
- SIGINT (signals; fastest and most successful): NSA, under the DoD and manned with DoD civilians and service members of all ranks and grades (political appointees are peppered throughout the higher DoD Pentagon establishment, not at this level).
- IMINT (imagery; fills many gaps the others cannot, very expensive): NGA, also under the DoD with a staff makeup similar to NSA.
- HUMINT (human; slow and very dangerous for those directly involved yet often answers the ‘why’ which the other two sometimes cannot): CIA, separate from DoD yet DoD has DCS.
- No -int can answer the mail without the others; they complement and support/validate each other.
- There are five National analysis centers (do some homework); why, because analysis can be guess work based on raw intelligence and sometimes we need separate opinions on thorny subjects.
Yes, we have had instances when our intel services have made mistakes and they have been dealt with and corrected both publicly and privately. Why privately, because doing it otherwise would endanger the country and erode public trust; precisely what our enemies want and are pushing for with so called rampant NSA civil liberties violation stories. As for violations of civil liberties, the services are made up of solid patriotic Americans who chose to live a life in the shadows of anonymity, for obvious security reasons, who love and uphold the Constitution. Of course there are partisans in the mist just like in any other USG entity with many people. There are many laws to protect US citizens from collateral and direct collection and many investigations occur yearly to investigate and remove those who break these laws. FISA is the legal instrument to collect against a known US citizen without their knowledge; it is a rigorous and onerous process.
All the intel community can ask for is the country’s trust they are doing their best to protect the People without having to be “transparent” since having a “transparent” intelligence service is an oxymoron for obvious reasons. Put it this way, when one goes into surgery, one does not know everything the surgeon is going to do yet one trusts the surgeon do to it right. Not a perfect analogy yet I think passes the point along. Consider how many attacks AQ or other groups have successfully conducted in US soil since Sep ‘11. Announcing these successes and how it was done would disclose the techniques used and thwart future successes, unless they can be attributed to other means such as good local police work. Lone homegrown wolves are a problem for local law enforcement.
Let us hope the SSCI and the HPSCI (Legislative branch watchdogs) have the country’s best interest at hand when they discharge their duties and are not pursuing political or personal vendettas.
Regards.
The Times needs to save its vitriol for the DHS which really does need to be shutdown.
For those thrown by some unfamiliar acronyms: NGA is not the National Governors Association, nor the National Gallery of Art, but the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency;
DCS does not stand for the Department of Children’s Services, nor Desktop Color Separation, nor the Drew Carey Show, but for Defense Communications System;
SSCI does not stand for the Social Sciences Citation Index, nor Self Service Check-In, but U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence;
HPSCI does not stand for Head Posture Spinal Curvature Instrument, but the House Permanent Subcommittee on Intelligence.
“... the point/question is if Capitalism needs to have it’s proponents use force to stamp out other ideas (namely Communism).”
If someone intends to enslave you by force, do you think you can reason your way out of it by talking about it?
Thank you.
Wouldn’t that be wasting resources and doubling the risk?
I mean, if the CIA already has human assets in place to gather intel, why would we want the Pentagon to have to set up another set of assets to do the covert ops? Obviously, not all assets can do both, but why not use the ones that can?
A spy is not a NAVY SEAL despite what the James Bond or Bourne movies want us to believe. A double agent in Beijing or Moscow is not going to do covert ops. The CIA should just run agents, wine, dine, pay and recruit them or blackmail them into providing information. Anything beyond that should be done by trained military personnel.
>> ... the point/question is if Capitalism needs to have its proponents use force to stamp out other ideas (namely Communism).

> If someone intends to enslave you by force, do you think you can reason your way out of it by talking about it?
Again, you aren’t addressing the question; furthermore, the question you raise is independent of the economic system.
Again, what prompted my question (in post 36) was the sentiment in Post 3:
“That said, yes, Im sure the CIA has acted out-of-line a few times but Communism did have to be contained.”
Reformulated, the question is this:
Does capitalism need its proponents to crush communism’s supporters in the marketplace of ideas, using “political correctness” for ideologies we like?
The followup question is this:
Does “defending against Communism” justify the government acting contrary the constraints imposed by the Constitution?
(If so, why? Moreover, what other ideological entities justify contraconstitutional actions?)
Because it hasn't happen yet doesn't mean that it won't (or can't) happen.
And if you think that the NSA is "good guys" search the word "loveint" to see how they abuse intel resources for personal reasons/profit; it's so common they made a keyword for this particular abuse.
The CIA has plenty of agents that are trained for both espionage and covert ops. Not all of them certainly, as I said, but they do have those resources.
Everything you see and hear publicly is subterfuge.
The entire government is a puppet government ruling us on behalf of the elites.
The OSS was set up in an entire floor of Rockefeller Center in NYC. Essentially it was a creation of MI6 on orders from their real bosses.
If you carefully review this bio it will allow you to surmise the possible connections, though of course it is not proof of anything nefarious.

The skull and bones fraternity has always been the boys club of the opium lords, which are the drug operatives of the real elites, the top financial families. These top operatives and a few of their close associates have the power in the US. Politics is just a show. George W. Bush and John Kerry are both s&b.
It takes audacity to set up a puppet government, run black ops out of the directors office, etc. These operatives are those with the audacity.
Lending to national governments means that the lender has a completely vested interest in knowing the outcome of wars beforehand, and they find it essential to control the leadership of the nations they lend to in order to make sure the national governments honor their bonds/debts by collecting taxes (instead of just printing their own money).
Consequently, research of the banking families going back to the middle ages shows us that they have always been at the forefront of espionage, since their private espionage always needs to be better than the espionage of national governments.
Thus top espionage operatives are the top trusted confidants of the banking families. Children of operatives are raised up in the “family business” thus loyalties go on for generations. The Bush family is a premier operative family.
The legal profession is also a critical endeavor for the banking families so they will have lawyers as top confidants; this provides an operative that is sophisticated enough from a legal standpoint to know what they can get away with. A good example of this type:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Helliwell
There is a “special relationship” that GWB spoke of when the Queen visited between the UK and US; the puppetmasters of both nations have an intimate relationship and bond that eclipses any “national loyalty”. That is, their banking family and our banking family work together. The current families control London/NYC financial markets for many generations, back to early 1800’s. Of course, the history of banking families goes much farther than that. They routinely marry cousins to keep wealth and power in the family. It has nothing to do with religion or politics, which are just tools to them.
They have always recruited from special forces for their “operations” sections in a revolving door.
They of course look to hire and promote according to their needs.
It’s such a shame that most people are deluded about who is really at the top of it all calling the shots.
OK, there it is folks, its all over immediately disband the whole thing because someone claims there is a problem ... And yes it does mean that it will not happen, else you are a total paranoid. See #82.
The entire government is a puppet government ruling us on behalf of the elites.
I tend to believe that. They sure aren’t ruling on our behalf.
All the more reason to abolish his writings.
No not at all.
