MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Gas prices are finally falling, but those savings might not last long.At least 18 states, including Minnesota, are considering taxing drivers based on distance. Gas prices arent the only reason for the idea, since newer cars get better gas mileage. Oregon has a pilot project that will start next year to test the idea. Theyre having 5,000 volunteers pay 1.5 cents per mile instead of the 30-cents-per-gallon tax.An electronic device attached to their vehicle will report how far they drive in state.

Pretty soon they’re going to put a tax on all the taxes, you know a tax for administering all these taxes on your ass.
A public BUS does a lot more damage than a car. Consider how heavy that thing is. Consider the gas it burns and consider how often hardly anyone rides it yet it still drives around burning a ton and being very heavy. Talk about bus routes wearing out roadways.

A monthly or yearly odometer check would never work either. For the same reason the gubmint loves income tax withholding- if you had to see how much and pay it, there'd be revolt.
The tax would be punitive on small business people, especially those who drive vehicles to various sites regularly, and to the poor. Of course then they’d exempt “the poor” - however they’d define it - and increase it on the middle class, and businesses.

The buses in my city (Topeka) are so subsidized and under utilized, it would almost be cheaper to subsidize a taxi service.
2013 ridership: 1,202,646
2013 revenue: $8,774,222 (only 1,591,321 was fares...rest is subsidized in various ways).
So the cost per rider trip was: $7.30...of that, the taxpayer paid $5.97.
Adding the additional cost of road damage is a good idea...and in all reality it brings the numbers closer to it making more sense for gubmint just to shell out free taxi rides...and re-hire the 88 employees to do road repair!
Our bus service has also suddenly gotten into the business of handing out passes to school kids who live too close to get free school bus service. I suspect this makes them exempt from paying state fuel taxes...and they are actually paying less than their fair share for road damage.
First of all - the gadget gives the government control over not just how much you use your car...but when you use it. They will use higher rates during rush hour, or in large metro areas, etc.
Secondly, that word “inspection” is a bad word. Not every state has it...and we certainly don’t need a reason to start.

I foresee a day when they just keep all our money we earn and parcel out how much they decide to give us to live on....according to our ‘needs’.

Just wondering about bicycle lanes, part of roadway? Who pays for that?
Who pays for the walkway/nature trails, inside a city?
Where does all the fine money end-up?

The per mile idea is about as stupid as you can get. The problem is the red diaper doper babies in their Leafs and other no where near “zero” emissions cars.
That is what I expect. I hope that our republican house kills it.

PA does that now. NJ had state inspection facilities... but diesels older than a certain year are amazingly excempt. So even though I now am in PA... I maintain a DL and registration of my 2 diesels... in NJ.
I don't care how "illegal" it is... if the PoPo have a problem with it I will just give a dumb look and say, "¿Que?"
it’s an extra tax on top of the tax they already collect. it’s currently 10 bucks.
My county told them to GFY when they doubled it to 10 bucks. So I live in one of a few counties that does not collect that tax.
Bike lanes are paid for by gas taxes...they get a free ride...although some metro areas charge a licensing fee for bikes.
Walkways and trails - usually paid for from city or county funds...viewed as part of the park system, which everyone gets to pay for, whether they use it or not. Unfortunately, more and more of these walkways are now walk/bike paths...and federal highway money sneaks in and pays some of the costs.
Fines - frankly, your city and county rely upon it as a revenue source...its a line item on the revenue side of their budget. In other words, when the good policeman implores you to ‘drive safe’ and not speed anymore, when he hands you your ticket....he doesn’t really mean it at all. The city budget depends on your speeding.
I am done working for the year. I am a contract on site computer/pos/network repairman. On top of that I am a power limited electrician (so anything 48 volts or less. aka computer networks, phones, alarms and CCTV) I just figured the miles for the year.

That means my tax bill would be a hair over 1700 bucks.. Now, given what we know about government and this has already been brought up.. what’s the likely hood that this tax will be ON TOP of everything else?

The problems in DC would be solved overnight.
