MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Gas prices are finally falling, but those savings might not last long.At least 18 states, including Minnesota, are considering taxing drivers based on distance. Gas prices arent the only reason for the idea, since newer cars get better gas mileage. Oregon has a pilot project that will start next year to test the idea. Theyre having 5,000 volunteers pay 1.5 cents per mile instead of the 30-cents-per-gallon tax.An electronic device attached to their vehicle will report how far they drive in state.

They already tax drivers: wheelage tax, gas tax, license/tabs fees...I’m betting this will be enacted IN ADDITION TO the state’s gas tax at the pump.
How about a pilot “Firing Squad” program for busybody legislators.
And 35E is getting toll booths next year near Maryland Avenue.
Plus Governor Goofy is going to try to get a tax at the ‘wholesaler’ level on fuel.
The Beatles generation sure took that “Taxman” song seriously.
“wheelage”: A word I’ve never before seen or heard.
My county has “wheelage” tax.(when you get tabs/plates)
Technology stalls Minnesota's statewide mileage tax idea (2013)

Double-counted miles were a frequent problem in one case a vehicle was recorded traveling 57 percent farther than its odometer showed it did. Only one in five drivers were confident that their fees were accurately tallied.
And you'll be considered wrong until you prove otherwise.
“Statewide, Gov. Mark Dayton has been considering a number of different ways to fix roads and bridges with less gas-tax revenue.”
What do you want to bet it’s the same thing as is going on down here in Texas. The gas tax is supposed to be for ROADS. Instead every other nitwit use has been allowed to dip into the gas tax revenue. Put it back to ‘roads use only’ and most of the problems go away as well.
If they try to attach one of these to my car, they will find it strapped to a squirrel in Montana 3 years later
Governor Goofy will always be Perpich.
Not even Dayton can wear that crown.
I wonder how people in Indiana like Mitch Daniel’s privately-run toll road?
Do. Not. Like!
Nothing stops them from instituting a ‘stepped’ fee schedule. Most of us plebes will get charged 1.5 cents a mile...but if we go over our state bestowed mileage allotment, we go into a different rate schedule...say 3 cents a mile.
It keeps us all nestled in urban areas, without getting any crazy ideas about moving to the suburbs.
I wonder why they think someone on a scooter should pay the same mileage tax as a Suburban? The leftists wanted us driving shoeboxes...many are...and then they don’t like the outcome. They’re never happy.
You are right-they want us all in the city to ride their choochoo trains.
Good! Tax the bejezus out of them. It’s a communist state in the making anyway.
Not only was Solomon ousted for disobeying God, his people rebelled from over taxation.
I would just drive across the border to Wisconsin to fill up.
At least they seem to use the $ to maintain their roads.
Truth be known, most sedans and light trucks do very little damage to the roads.
Big rigs, dump trucks, snow plows, etc. do most of the damage. The current tax structure sort of accounts for that...i.e., a dump truck burns more gas and pays more tax than an econobox.
So this proposal completely dismantles any semblance of fairness in the gas tax structure...and can easily be used to ‘control’ behavior. Same as smart meters on your house...sooner or later some do-gooder will decide to up the gas tax during rush hour to reduce congestion...and probably give you a discount for trips that are direct from your house to the train station, etc.
