As Mayor Bill de Blasio took the podium Saturday at the funeral of P.O. Rafael Ramos, thousands of police officers in the streets watching video of the service inside turned their backs, in unison, to the monitors.

I don’t know - I only heard that the police asked him to stay away.
If the families asked him to stay away, he should have been treated like any other unwanted crasher, and the NYPD should have prevented him from violating the families’ wishes.

I read last evening he arrived one hour before the END of the ceremony and that was only due to them extending the ceremony for another hour or 10pm EST. I was asking where he was since 9am Friday. He didn’t make an “appearance” until 9pm some 12 hours later. Not early at all. Totally disrepectful scumbag. Even Giuliani was there while Mayor de Bastard blew it off all day long until he must have heard the suspicion that he wasn’t showing up at all.

I hope they did the same to Biden; if anything, deserves it more as Obama’s representative.

“De Blasio arrived only a short time before the service ended. He arrived around 9 PM to the wake, which started at 7 PMso late that many assumed he had decided to skip the service, and some early news reports had said he did not attend.”

Harsh words: This banner was seen flying across New York City on Friday morning. It refers to the moment police officers turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio following the deaths of two cops last weekend

Turn their back on De Blasio BUT bend over and assume “the Position” for Obama.. holding cheeks open for inspection?
Are we talking “Barney Fife” here.? Jacques Clouseau?.. OR Homer Simpson?..

“Earlier that night, when de Blasio approached a group of NYPDs Finest and said, Were all in this together, a stone-faced officer replied, No, were not.
Officers again turned their backs on deBlasio Friday night when he arrived at Ramos wake.”

Exactly right. That was the first thing I thought of.
Good luck with that, "mayor".
Once that door closes, the next door to open is under the "EXIT" sign.

The family asked DeB to be there. And while I loathe him and understand the feelings of the officers of the NYPD,I think turning their backs and chatting, even though it was outside on Myrtle Avenue was disrespectful to the family and to their murdered brother.

They respected the dead....but not the words of De Blasio.
This is profoundly personal to me. I was at the White House the other day, and the president of the United States turned to me, and he met Dante a few months ago, and he said that Dante reminded him of what he looked like as a teenager. And he said I know you see this crisis through a very personal lens. And I said to him, I did.
Because Chirlane and I have had to talk to Dante for years about the dangers that he may face. A good young man, law-abiding young man who would never think to do anything wrong. And yet, because of a history that still hangs over us, the dangers he may face, we've had to literally train himas families have all over this city for decadesin how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police officers who are there to protect him. And that painful sense of contradiction that our young people see first, that our police are here to protect us, and we honor that, and at the same time, there's a history we have to overcome, because for so many of our young people, there's a fear. And for so many of our families, there's a fear.
So I've had to worry over the years. Chirlane's had to worry. Is Dante safe each night? There are so many families in this city who feel that each and every night. Is my child safe? And not just from some of the painful realitiescrime and violence in some of our neighborhoodsbut is safe from the very people they want to have faith in as their protectors.
