WASHINGTON — President Obama has decided to sign legislation imposing further sanctions on Russia and authorizing additional aid to Ukraine, despite concerns that it will complicate his efforts to maintain a unified front with European allies, the White House said on Tuesday.

The legislation calls for a raft of new measures penalizing Russia’s military and energy sectors and authorizes $350 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including antitank weapons, tactical surveillance drones and counter-artillery radar. The bill was approved unanimously by Congress, but Mr. Obama hedged for days on whether he would sign it. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

The scene at a mall in central Moscow. Fearing inflation, Russians are reacting to the falling ruble by snapping up expensive items like appliances and laptops.

Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, announced the decision to approve the bill even as he described the president’s qualms over it. Mr. Earnest said it sent a “confusing message” internationally, including language “that does not reflect the consultations” with European powers. But in the end, he added, the president opted to allow the bill to become law because it does contain some flexibility that will give him room to maneuver.

Yes, I agree. I think he should stop bothering his neighbors and name the country after himself. That’s the way out for him. I even have what I think is a good name - Putinstan.

I don’t know. I do know there was some guy( author/economist) who in 2008 (youtube has his lecture somewhere)warned that Zbrinski was going to stir the pot somehow. Maybe it was a lucky guess. It just seems that relations with Russia were better when GW was in office.

yea dude keep thinking like that, how do you think Hitler got his rise? His Germen currency was being devalued and sanctioned and isolated. That’s how he builds up “Soviet Nationalism.”

“”it does contain some flexibility that will give him room to maneuver.””

That’s a tired old phrase of obozo’s...not much imagination. Does he ever use it in reference to any country other than Russia?

Hitler was a political genius, but he was a bungler in military matters and he led his nation to annihilation. Even Hitler had more experience on the battlefield than Putin who never fought in combat in his life.

This sucks!

Just when it looked like the existing sanctions were actually having an affect and the economy of Russia was starting to suffer, Obama is now going to get involved.

I’m sure his new sanctions will work as well as his recovery summer (all 3 of them), red line in Syria, democratic Arab spring, cash for clunkers, bank bail outs, financial industry regulations, etc...

It seems what ever he tries to do has the opposite affect. I expect Russia’s economy to be soaring in a couple of months.

What is it with Obama, poking the bear? I thought he liked Communists. Or is it a black/white thing with Putin? /S

Of course, hussein being a communist, has an ally in Putin, who is rebuilding the USSR. But another dimension, beyond politics, is at work here. Since hussein is a homosexual, his hatred of Putin in that regard trumps his love for a fellow communist. In that sense, hussein sees Putin as a threat to his advancement of the homosexual agenda.

Lousy comparison, and inaccurate, just useless.

Inaccurate. Putin doesn’t have the muscle to confront NATO head on.

Russia knows it is too weak for war with NATO, and to lose it’s military would leave Russia open to dismantling by internal and external forces.

Obama only likes to kick ‘em when they are already down.

God, let's pray that he does, Reagan sure did, Reagan never let up on them, he hounded them all over the world, exhausting them, exhausting their budgets, constantly cornering them and asserting himself, it was heady times and they hated it, as did the American left and the international left.
