Wendy Davis, who lost the Nov. 4 gubernatorial election to Republican Greg Abbott, has won Texas Monthly magazine's coveted "Bum Steer of the Year" award for her "train wreck" of a campaign.
The annual awards take a snarky jab at Texas politicians, odd news stories and personalities. Fromer winners include Anna Nicole Smith, Gov. Rick Perry, Lance Armstrong and Tom Delay.
This year's cover depicts Davis stepping in a cow patty while wearing the bright pink Mizuno "Wave Rider" sneakers she donned during her 2013 filibuster against Texas' new abortion restrictions that brought her into the national spotlight.
The magazine cited a banner year for Texas politics including Gov. Rick Perry's indictment on allegations that he abused his office and the antics of U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert but wrote Wednesday, "But nothing, and we mean nothing, could match the train wreck that was Wendy Davis, Battleground Texas, and the Democrats."
The magazine points out that though Davis had national recognition and large campaign coffers, the Democratic state senator from Fort Worth's campaign suffered from "Infighting! Staff shake-ups! Tension with the press! Missteps over her own biography!"
Davis ultimately lost by more percentage points than Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Sanchez did in 2002, Texas Monthly wrote, and won 270,499 fewer votes than Democratic candidate for governor Bill White did in 2010.
"No one suggested that 2014 would be the year that the party roared back to life. No one argued that the Democrats would put the Republicans in a tough spot come Election Day," Texas Monthly wrote. "But did anyone think that Davis, after all the national exposure and all the money that flowed into her coffers, would be throttled so badly by Republican Greg Abbott in her race to become governor?"
"It's not that the Democrats underperformed. It's that the party that hasn't won a statewide race since 1994 actually dug itself an even deeper hole!"
"To add insult to injury," the magazine wrote, Davis' state Senate seat got snatched by a Republican in November.
"Davis may be out of politics for now, but she didn't walk away empty-handed: she is our Bum Steer of the Year."
Good for Wendy. She won something she richly deserves.
She earned it.
What’s that stuff she just stepped in? Did her brains leak out?
How far did this dame actually think she was going to go in state like Texas????????????????????????????????????
She would be a much better fit in my wacky state (CA).
Ditto with Landrieu.
What about the drunk ethics officer? Not even an honorable mention?

Um, that runner up award should be going to the drunk with power Travis County DA, not Rick Perry.

Well, I'll give her mug shot a post....
Ditto with Landrieu.

Landrieu became the last democrat to hold statewide office
in LA. She served three terms.
Yeah and how she survived in that seat for 18 years with a record as liberal as hers still amazes me.
She’s more of a heifer than a steer.
I can’t remember when that liberal Austin rag “Texas Monthly” gave the bum steer to a democrat.
She is jack*** of 2014 LOL!
No brainer. The Texas Monthly staff wrote this up and took the rest of the week off.
lol
whores give sex for money
We get the mag for free at our home. It goes directly into the round file.
I see them as the New Yorker but with BBQ joint reviews.
In leafing through single issue it is obvious their hatred of conservative values.
I bad mouth them to anyone who will listen; many people just assume that since it says "Texas" on the cover it possesses our values. I got my dentist to eject it from his office!
Yes, I’m fully aware that Texas Monthly is a liberal rag. My point is that Abortion Barbie made their pick too easy for them.
