TIME's Choice for 'Person of the Year' Angers Supporters of Ferguson Protesters (Of course)
NewsBusters ^ | December 10, 2014 | Randy Hall

Every December, the people at TIME magazine choose the “Person of the Year,” who is described as “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.” Two of the candidates for the 2014 honor were: the Ferguson, Missouri, protesters, “who took to the streets ... following the fatal shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old by a white police officer;” and the Ebola caregivers, who are still fighting the biggest outbreak of the disease in history, which has so far claimed the lives of nearly 7,000 people in West Africa. On Wednesday morning, editor Nancy Gibbs announced the Ebola fighters as their choice because “they risked and persisted, sacrificed and saved” during a year in which “an outbreak turned into an epidemic" around the world, striking “doctors and nurses in unprecedented numbers. ... Anyone willing to treat the disease's victims 'ran the risk of becoming one.'”

The Ferguson protesters came in second, a selection that quickly sent many supporters to the Internet to vent their anger and disappointment. @rolandsmartin got the ball rolling when he asked people who thought the protesters should have gotten the honor to “Weigh in now!” “I think so, Roland,” @revbrown51 agreed, because “Ferguson is showing the world what democracy looks like" -- a dubious assertion at best. “Pretty sure TIME probably didn't pick Ferguson protesters as people of the year because it would've been too 'risky,” @thenKTwrote asserted, and @DrewKerr agreed that selecting that group “would have required more balls.”

@sophsaproblem summarized many posters' feelings when she declared: “Ferguson protesters should have gotten that TIME cover” because “everybody's almost forgotten about Ebola already, but Ferguson has kept the public's attention for months.” She added that the people around the nation are “actually working to change the world, and they're succeeding.”

“Succeeding?” the Twitchy staff asked incredulously before stating: Well, if stopping traffic and looting are your metrics, than yes -- the protesters have won. And as for Ebola as an old story, not really. ... Just because the media isn’t focused on Ebola doesn’t mean the problem went away. Thousands are still dying and at risk in Africa. “Second is still pretty good,” the website staff added. “Or not.” @Gerald Soetz simply called the selection “sad,” while @drmacia swore: “I'll never buy another TIME mag.”

However, other supporters of the Ferguson protesters saw the choice in a more positive light. "Their refusal to let a life be forgotten turned a local shooting into a national movement,” stated @WesleyLowery, while @deray said he was “humbled” and “proud” even though there is “more work to do.” “I love being in good company,” @Nettaaaaaaaaa noted before telling her “friends in the movement” that “I love yall.” Meanwhile, several individuals claimed “It's about time TIME got it right,” as @KarenSL did. @CHOWSTL said the magazine made a “better choice than Ferguson protesters,” and @fsolid declared it was “fantastic to see TIME recognize frontline health worker heroes fighting the Ebola outbreak.” “People fighting a possible global pandemic deserve this,”

@ericstamps stated while @AfroRhapsody indicated: “Both issues are important, but Ebola is a much greater threat to humanity. These Ebola fighters are risking their lives.” Sadly, @KarenSL predicted: “No doubt this will cause new protests/riots from Ferguson protesters.”

Other candidates who were considered for the honor included Vladimir Putin, the Russian president who oversaw the Winter Olympics in Sochi and the annexation of Crimea, as well as ongoing civil strife in eastern Ukraine. Also being considered was Taylor Swift, one of the world's top-selling singers; and Jack Ma, an English teacher who founded Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce giant.

Tim Cook, who introduced Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, was another finalist; as was National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell; and Masoud Barzani, the acting president of the Iraqi Kurdish Region who has combined the region's push for independence with the battle with ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). Previous choices for “Person of the Year” -- a tradition that began in 1927 -- have included popes John Paul II and Francis, every president and such bizarre picks as whistleblowers and protesters. Still, the most peculiar choice came in 2006, when “You” -- the millions of people who contribute to the World Wide Web -- were honored. That issue's unusual cover featured a computer on a desk with a reflective surface in its screen so people could see themselves in the illustration.

I’m sick of people trying to recreate the Sixties.

The only time I ever see a copy of “Time” is when I visit the doctor. And it’s so thin and ad-heavy, that I keep wondering when it (along with the New York Times) will be ceasing publication (and thereby cutting down on the trash). Unlike the Telephone Book, it doesn’t even make good TP. BTW, “People” and “Redbook” should also be stricken from the Doctor’s coffee table. No wonder we have LIVs!

A well-staged riot isn’t enough enough to make you famous.

The Sixties are so dated.

All the old magazines that used to mean something are now plain garbage. The writers aren’t even TRYING to find interesting stories and so much of it is pretentious garbage and asinine philosophical questions, it’s annoying.

Something gnaws at me here.

Are we supposed to believe that the people of Ferguson that would likely care about the title
A/ actually read TIME and
B/ take the time to write in the comment section?
I am not trying to ‘blanket’ the situation, I am talking hard core.

Also, since Time magazine refers to the ‘unarmed Black Teenager, guess it is okay to drop that AA term...which, by the way I refuse to use.

Actually it is really kind of ‘cruel’(rude) for these ‘protestors’ to demand the title when the ‘Winner’ is working towards saving REAL Africans. (Of course with some of our homegrown types, that may be part of the problem).

People from the Continent, generally don’t cotton up to American Blacks. Was involved in some kind of program years back where we had some Africans from Sierra Leone (I think) on work visas ... I had 3 of them excellent workers but didn’t know what we were doing...they about drove me bugs because when they finished a ‘task I had made up for them - mostly to keep them away from my regular crew, they would hunt me down to see what was next.
I had a #2(Black) and he basically ran the men as I was Supt/Foreman and the ‘Africans’, right from the gitgo told the #2..we don’t work for you, we work for the White Man... Sure they didn’t have that attitude back ‘home’ but they knew here (or figured they did) they stood a better chance dealing with me....My man laughed and said you really don’t know what you are doing if you only take orders from him. Those guys would do ANYTHING I told them. Remember one incident where I gave one a flag and the other 2 brooms and told them to start sweeping the gutters....a while later my ‘Man’ says where are your pets.. Them ‘fools’ started sweeping and kept going, I found them ‘outside the work zone’. Of course ‘OUR’ guys didn’t like being showed up by them...

Ditto for radio. Glad our new car has Sirius/XM. Don’t mind paying to get stuff that you can listen to when you drive. Just wonder how long it will last. Here in CA it’s either Yi, Yi, Yi Mexican, or stuff that defies description on both AM and FM!

Protestors will undoubtedly try to murder, riot, loot, burn, and pillage more in order to be the sole "Person of the Year" for the 2015 selection.

I guess we are ‘fortunate’ it is as cold as it is as tonight the DC downtown was treated to TWO separate groups, 1 for Ferguson/NYC and the other against the Congress screwing with the Pot law....

Between them they had several ‘moving road blocks’ and the cops were running ragged keeping up with them.

BTW had at least 4 shootings in the other parts of town, No Chicago #s but ‘pretty impressive’ for a cold night.

Same with the ladies magazines; as a teen I used to subscribe to Young and Modern and “Teen,” but stopped once the funny stories section started to devolve into sanitary napkin jokes and the stories started becoming centered on more smut. It’s beyond pointless now. You can’t even get a position as a writer if you’re lacking a degree and lack a requisite ‘portfolio’ of boringly PC work. It’s all about an adolescent exploration of sex sex sex. Now apparently radio is in pieces.

“I'll never buy another TIME mag.”

I can't help myself. . . I'm one of those Internet grammar police. I've gotta fix it for him:

"I'll never steal another Time mag."

There, all better. . .

The Ferguson looters should maybe sign up for one-way tickets to western Africa to volunteer to do something useful, like saving their African brothers. Then they can get some praise.

“Ferguson is showing the world what democracy looks like"

This creature is right. Democracy looks like mob rule, just as the framers feared it would.
