A historic number of America's youth 2.5 million children are homeless according to a report recently released by the National Center on Family Homelessness. These children, the report shows, are victims of a number of variables that contribute to homelessness including single motherhood, racial disparities and low household incomes.
The report, based on data compiled from the U.S. Department of Education and the Census Bureau, reveals that many of the nation's homeless children are on the verge of losing their housing, don't have a fixed residence, are living in places not designated for human beings, or are living in some kind of temporary housing. Many homeless children's circumstances are tied to problems plaguing their families.
According to the report, "Poverty rates are highest for families headed by single women, particularly if they are Black or Hispanic."
Families headed by single women in 2013 experienced poverty at a rate that was five times higher than "married-couple families," the study exposed, making them and their children more susceptible to homelessness.
The poverty rate for single-mother families in 2013 was 39.9 percent compared to 7.6 percent of married couple families. The median income for single mother-led families was $25,493 in 2012; the median for married couple families that same year was $83,455.
The report revealed that disparities between low and high income families were exacerbated by the Great Recession. Quoting a 2014 bulletin from the U.S. Federal Reserve, it found that "families at the bottom of the income distribution experienced ongoing substantial declines in average real incomes between 2010 and 2013."
Poverty rates are particularly high among African American families as nearly a quarter of black families live in poverty.
African American families also experience higher homelessness rates.
Nearly 60 percent of shelter residents are minorities with African Americans three times more likely to be homeless compared to the overall U.S. population. Black children under age 5 are 29 times more likely to end up in an emergency shelter than their white counterparts.
Homeless children are more likely to go hungry for extended periods of time, be sick more often and struggle in school. Homeless children are also susceptible to mental illness. Up to 25 percent of homeless pre-school children have mental health problems and require clinical evaluation, the study found. The rate of mental illness increases to 40 percent among school-age children.
Child homelessness particularly impacts southern states such as Alabama and Mississippi, which ranks the worst and second worst in the United States.
Somebody’s getting fired, these reports are only supposed to come out when a Republican is in the White House.
They are only allowed to write about "the homeless" when there is a Republican president.
2.5M is almost 1% of the US population. If you consider only children it’s gotta be much bigger - like at least 10%.
Are one out of every ten children really homeless in the USA? Color me skeptical.
How many children who are US citizens are homeless? I’d bet it’s a much lower number. I’d also bet if we sent illegals back to their homes, we’d have enough money and people to actually help the Americans who are in need.
It is OK that these come out because Obama is not being blamed. Only Republican presidents can get blamed. The fact that more people are homeless now only points to the need for more government intervention. And higher taxes from the “rich”.
Of course it’s also to set the stage for Fauxchohontas’ campagin.
The’ll take your child if you let them play outside, but let you keep it if you can’t provide basic needs.
These report come out but the media don’t blame democrats for it
Someone officially proclaimed 'data' to be singular, I guess.
HF
This may be an important statistic that points to the demographics of it all!
This might be the first homeless story I have seen in 6 years. With the economy so bad in the past 6 years, there should be stories every day.
Women, children and minorities hardest hit. Say, "Thank, you, Obama!"......................
I’m skeptical too....
From Wiki....
Homelessness in the United States is an area of concern for social service providers, government officials, policy professionals, and society at large.[1] The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2012 annual point-in-time count found that 633,782 people across America were homeless. With 2007 as a benchmark, the data from the report showed a 6.8 percent decline in homelessness among individuals, a 3.7 percent decline of homeless families, a 13.1 percent decline of the unsheltered homeless population, and a 19.3 percent decline in persons experiencing chronic homelessness. During the overall count, 62,619 veterans were found homeless nationwide.[2] One out of 50 children or 1.5 million children in America will be homeless each year.[3] In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million.[4]

Only 633,782 people across America were homeless, yet there are 2.5 million homeless children?
One thing is certain. Bleeding Heart libs suck at math.
“””reveals that many of the nation’s homeless children are on the verge of losing their housing, don’t have a fixed residence, are living in places not designated for human beings, or are living in some kind of temporary housing.”””
So, they’re not really homeless - they’re not living in our homes. YET.
So are these legal citizen children or do they include all the illegal children brought here and dumped with or with out family? I know quite a few children and none of them are homeless.
and the Left, the Democrats can be thanked for this situation. Partially the Right’s problem in that they allowed the Left to accomplish it.
Clearly, the MSM is moving on from Obama and concentrating on 2016 early.
This is bull-shitte.
Look at what they defined as “homeless” .
It like the “hungry in America” propaganda:
“In the past year, have you ever felt hungry when you went to bed at night?”
“Do you ever worry about being fed?”
“Have you ever skipped a meal in the past year?”
Its the welfare system, stupid! When you pay women to have babies and not have a job or husband this is what you get. Reduce welfare and the number of children is reduced and therefore the homeless families.
Oh by the way, that number is made up out of thin air. They want more money.
