How Antioch Solved Campus Sexual Offenses Two Decades Ago

As colleges across the country struggle to develop procedures for dealing with sexual misconduct and sexual-misconduct complaints, it’s time to take a second look at the effort that was made to deal with campus sexual offenses two decades ago by Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

A tiny college, founded before the Civil War by Horace Mann, the legendary educational reformer, Antioch has always been innovative, and its ’90s effort to come up with sexual-conduct guidelines reflected this tradition. The Antioch rules—officially, the Sexual Offense Prevention Policy—centered on the idea that “consent must be obtained each and every time there is sexual activity.” The rules, spelled out in the Antioch Student Handbook, did not, moreover, stop there. They had a corollary: “Each new level of sexual activity requires consent.”

The author leaves out Antioch College actually closed for several years and when it reopened to get students to enroll it offered free tuition. What happened to the Left fighting for Free Love and getting the gov't/religion out of the bedroom? Interesting they tore up the old social structures for a free for all. Now they don't like the results so they are using the power of the state to bring out the rules. I prefer when society through social regulations kept thing inline. Now one has a Victorian revival at the end of the barrel of a gun.

All the while we celebrate the “hook-up” lifestyle of college students and do away with men-only dorms and women-only dorms.

Maybe it’s different now, but the students at Antioch when I was in school (i.e., when dinosaurs walked the earth rather than swim in your tank) were some of the weirdest social misfits I ever met. My visit there made me think I was in the middle of a hippy lovefest. Sounds like things haven’t changed much.

Any perversion goes as long as it’s consensual. When it comes to perversion or abortion, choice is king.

But freedom to choose your child’s school? Fuhgedaboudit.

"The policy had its origins with the Womyn of Antioch, a campus feminist group ..."

Oh, no, really?

I wonder if this rule applies to homosexuals. I bet not.

The Daily Beast. Isn’t that an offshoot of Newsweak?

Antioch College is and always was a pathetic excuse for an educational institution. It’s basically a place for hippies to smoke pot and blather about the glories of communism.

What happened to the left? They got control and decided that they wanted control over our freedoms. Just like every other totalitarian regime out there.

Another example of the Left destroying a fine institution. Horace Mann was the first President and it was one of the first college to have in theory a mixed racial and gender student body.

Horace Mann was a very early “progressive”, a secularist and a primary proponent of government controlled education. Today’s cesspools of socialist indoctrination are his progeny. He personally would likely have been appalled by them I find it unsurprising, though, that unmoored from Christ his Prussian System government controlled schools have become anti-Christ.

Maybe that’s why Antioch already went bankrupt once, and has tried to reopen here.
