President Barack Obama said Saturday he authorized the attempt to rescue American Luke Somers in Yemen because the U.S. had information that the American photojournalist’s life was in imminent danger.

Shortly before the White House statement, Yemen’s national security chief said militants had planned to kill Somers on Saturday. […]

The president said he “strongly condemns the barbaric murder of Luke Somers at the hands of al-Qaida terrorists” and reaffirmed that the U.S. “will spare no effort to use all its military, intelligence and diplomatic capabilities to bring Americans home safely, wherever they are located.”

Obama said terrorists “who seek to harm out citizens will feel the long arm of American justice.” …

Uh-huh. A GOP president in place of Obama and the AP would be hammering away with “failed rescue attempt” in the first paragraph. And Benghazi would be dusted off in the next paragraph. But a disaster like this due to Obama and the AP actually cheers.

TV coverage in Boston seemed heavy on the bold and decisive action of our courageous president. He saw the problem, he understood the danger, he took swift action. Sadly, things did not turn out well.

I cannot imagine Boston TV crews having a similar viewpoint for a Republican president who would clearly act like a cowboy, go in unprepared, endanger innocent lives, and basically bungle the entire operation in a desperate, failed, search for a bump in the polls.

I don't know what others are seeing around the country, but I swear the cheerleading for Obama has only increased where I live.

The left is once again doubling down. They know they have a friendly GOP-e contingent in the Senate, so they are not discouraged.

I can’t stand seeing the word “authorized”, “approved”, or any other form of leadership verbiage with this idiot. The word “approved” should be from the warden of the prison in which he’s serving time. The warden “approved” 30 days in the hole. The warden “authorized” a denial of 30 minutes in the yard for exercise etc.

I wonder if Luke Somers life really was in imminent danger prior to the failed rescue. I trust nothing that comes out of this White House. Well, really nothing that comes out of Washington.

The press didn’t exactly fawn on Carter after the disastrous attempt to rescue the Teheran hostages.

Quite right. More critically, I don’t think the press was as far in the progressive bag then as they are now.

What the press believes to be increasing conservative radicalism is of course mainly their own increasing liberal radicalism.

If the press was not “as far in the progressive bag” back then, then explain their propaganda campaign against the Vietnam War.

While the opposition against that was was generally from the Left, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a good conservative case against it. Reflexively supporting anything liberals oppose isn’t a good way to choose a policy.

Vietnam was when liberals and media went off the tracks. I don’t claim they weren’t generally liberal then, or under Carter, simply that they weren’t AS liberal then as they are now.
