There are just not enough customers with enough money to support the critical mass of quality merchandise to keep the customers coming in to buy more quality goods and higher margin goods. There are also too many big box discount stores offering competition that did not exist in the heyday of department store chains.
The last “Kenmore(washer and dryer)” we bought was 2 POSs and died w/in 2 years.
Sears spun off Lands End earlier this year.
Really? Ours are second or third hand and work like a charm.
My parents bought everything from Sears — tools, lawn mowers, clothing, appliances, tvs, you name it. I did the same when I first went out on my own, but no more. Everything they sell is junk.
Won't miss Sears when it finally croaks. Just too bad it's taking Kmart with it. I actually like Kmart.
Could it be Sears bought Kmart. Kmart is anti-gun and took all sporting items that related, out.
Generally not bad stores that I have been in, but the company is being horrendously marketed and managed.
Sears lost its identity long ago, and hasn’t even sadly come close to finding it again.
They got taken over by an investment banker who knows nothing about retail and who has refused to listen to anyone who does.
They got old and refused to change their business model. Young people call Sears, Penny’s and others like them ‘Old Fogey Stores’....................
Sears real estate holdings are in the billions. It’s the only thing that has kept them afloat. They have been selling off properties to absorb their operating losses in retail. But they still hold real estate valued at between and 7 billion.
Good. Used to buy a lot from Lands End, but the last two sweaters I bought from them 3 years ago fell apart in the washing machine after a few wearings. If I’m going to pay good money for clothing, they had better last a long time.
No doubt, think their floor investment is $1 per square ft when average retail is $9 per sq ft. And this is annual spending, and they have been underspending on to this degree for a long long time now.
End of the day, investment banker at the helm knows jack crap about retail and has not listened to anyone that does.
I’ve had Sears out twice to fix a dishwasher and a mower. Both of them were excellent and knew exactly what to do.
Wal-Mart sells some Craftsman tools also.
Sears, Roebuck & Company was the Amazon.com of America’s outhouse days. When a company’s sales are growing they can afford to hire the best talent and offer a career path with promotions. When sales go down there’s little opportunity for advancement and the best people leave or are laid off by a spreadsheet monkey. That leaves the people that no one else will hire, creating a death spiral of sadness and failure.
Shoot I just bought new Refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, freezer, washer and dryer from them but I paid cash as their sales are great on certain items...
I have had my vacuum cleaner from Sears for at least 20 years. It’s the best appliance I’ve ever owned, as is the refrigerator that’s now in our basement. That’s even older.
I remember the great old days when Sears sold everything from appliances, to small motorbikes, to guns, to tools. Mostly everything they sold was well-made stuff.. the Kenmore washers and dryers were the best.
Wait do they have Ellen as their spokesperson to? That’s the sole reason why JCP is also shuttering stores and losing money right? I know because I read that here on FR...
