We interrupt this week’s deluge of executive amnesty and Grubergate coverage to bring you this heartwarming Friday afternoon palate cleanser. First, some brief background, from HuffPo:
They may be our biggest rivals on the ice, but when it comes to honouring our American neighbours, Canadians don’t pass up on the opportunity to chime in. The video, filmed Nov. 18, shows the opening of the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. the Nashville Predators hockey game. When Canadian singer Michelle Madeira began the American national anthem, her microphone failed. So what did the Canadian crowd do? They picked up right where she left off.
They sure did, and impressively so:
They had the lyrics down pat and didn’t miss a beat. Stirring stuff. Show of hands: How many of you know the words to the Canadian national anthem? I happen to, but that’s mostly a product of being exposed to it so many times as a hockey fan (go Devils). I’ll leave you with this clip from an NHL game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers just after the terrorist shootings in Ottawa last month. Even though a Canadian team wasn’t competing on the ice, the pregame ceremony featured a moving rendition of ‘O Canada’, with the American crowd singing along (admittedly with lyrics displayed on the jumbotron) in solidarity with our great friends and neighbors to the north:
We stand on guard for thee!
I wonder how many Americans know the Canadian anthem .....
I love Canadians! I sing “O Canada” when a Canadian team comes to play my Stars.
Canadians feel bad for us in the National leadership realm. They have Steven Harper, and we have who we have , and they feel sorry for us...
I know when to yell “TRUE NORTH” part like all good Canadians do.
That was classy. Very beautiful and respectful.
After Obama, I think they really do feel for us.
I dunno.
Is that a Stompin' Tom song?
Soon everyone will mourn the end of the United States of America.
I know it’s called “O Canada!” But I’m not familiar with the song. I might just have to look it up.
I think the times have changed since the anti-Bush nonsense subsided. Many realize what a disaster Obama is as well. I also think the recent terror attacks here, although nowhere near as devastating as your loss, did something to bring us closer as well.
Heartwarming, indeed ;-)
I’ve always maintained that national anthems - Canadian, American or otherwise - should be sung by the fans at sporting events anyway, and not by some artsy-fartsy, look-what-I-can-do, egotistical soloist who more often than not sings it in such a contorted way that even if you wanted to sing along, you could not.
I much preferred how it was done many years ago, when the announcer would say something like “Please rise and JOIN in singing the national anthem”, and any band or singer on the field was clearly there to lead the fans in everyone singing the anthem, not just to sit on there arses and listen.
In fact, I see it as a sign of encroaching liberalism that the crowds at stadiums no longer join in singing, since even the anthem itself is now seen as something to be provided to the masses, rather than as something achieved through everyone’s voluntary participation.
Thanks for that post.
It’s appreciated.
I need to see stuff like that once in a while.
When Michigan Masonic Grand Lodge is held near Detroit, they have sung “O Canada” after Star Spangled Banner.
Cool.
RE: I am going to learn the words to “Oh Canada”.
Here are the words:
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

It’s Bud the Spud
From the bright red mud
Rollin’ down the highway smilin’
The spuds are big
on the back of Bud’s rig
‘Cause they’re from Prince Edward Island
They’re from Prince Edward Island
(and yes, that’s from memory, lol)
I have to admit I don’t think I know all the words to the Star Spangled Banner, even as many times as I’ve heard it. I’ll try to pick it up.
Here in SFL, at the Panthers game (our NHL team), when they play the Leafs, there are MORE Toronto jerseys than Panthers.
Next time I won’t feel so bad!
Yeah, it's kinda like O Tannenbaum or Maryland, My Maryland or something like that.
We've lot's of trees
and Hudsons Bay
Our highways mostly
run both ways...
