In Harlem River Park in Manhattan, homeless men can be seen sleeping on benches around the basketball courts and sprawled out on a soccer field by day, then hunkering under an overpass at night.
In Brooklyn, dog owners in Fort Greene Park have had ugly confrontations with homeless people after their dogs woke them up in the early morning when they are allowed off-leash. And in the Bronx, there are so many homeless people in one small park, Devanney Triangle, that the community board and parks department are discussing the removal of all benches.
After a decade in which the number of homeless people on New York Citys streets had fallen by almost 25 percent, this year has seen an uptick in their number: On a single day in January, the population of the so-called street homeless was 3,357, representing an increase of 6 percent from the year before.
A result has been a growing number of homeless encampments in the citys parks, traffic squares and plazas. The attendant behavior like public urination, sleeping on benches and violating the blanket 1 a.m. parks curfew has led to tensions with neighboring communities.
Over all, the citys homeless population is at a record high, with 57,676 people living in shelters as of early November, in addition to the growing numbers on the streets. In the past month, Mayor Bill de Blasios office has convened an interagency task force to address the issue. As part of that effort, the city has identified 25 sites where the street homeless are congregating in large numbers. The sites include parks, private buildings, vacant lots and bridges, which have become priorities for the outreach teams who fan out across the citys five boroughs daily to engage people living on the streets.

DeBlasiovilles.
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.
NY voted for Castro DiBlasio now they deserve all the misery that will befall them.
A park located precisely one block away from the Fordham-Tremont Community Mental Health Center.
What an amazing coincidence.
Welcome to Obama’s America.
We have a HUGE homeless problem in, ‘The People’s Republic of Madistan.’
If you build it, they WILL come!
The first offense was jail. Second offense was a hole made in the beggar's ear made with a hot poker, so that other people would know they were beggars. And after many offenses the beggar may be put to death by hanging.
Begging was not a case of treason so they were just hung instead of getting the added benefit of drawing and quartering.
Move them into Gracie Mansion and open tenting grounds at the UN.
How is this possible?
The mayor is a demonicrat. The President is a demonicrat.
Used to be homelessness only happened in Republican administrations ...
What's the point of this story coming out now? -tom
Normally the media don’t report about homeless problems when a good Democrat is president. And a report from a city with a good Communist type as mayor??? I’m shocked just shocked that New York is not a socialist utopia. How can they have a homeless problem in their socialist paradise???
Enjoy your trip back to the 70’s, New Yorkers. You asked for it and now your gonna get it.
The homeless are as crazy as the elite NYCers are. The so called homeless are not on meds like the elite NYCers.
Lots of data here - and none of it is good news:

Obama is in big trouble. The New York Times is supposed to save articles like this for when Republicans are in office.
I live in the suburbs now, but last year I was in NYC. I voted for “No Chance” (the Republican) instead of “No Way” (di Blasio). A lot of my liberal friends voted R as well, because di Blasio was too much for them. It’s amazing to me how many flat-out socialists and commies NYC has, because even your garden variety liberals didn’t vote for di Blasio.
DiBlasio = Dinkins 2.0. I'm only a little surprised that it's taken less than one year.
happened in Republican administrations ...
Is it not amazing how everything Democrats do poorly, everyting, and they spin it to blame on Republicans?
Oh how will we ba able to enlighten our low information voters, take away their eye phones, God No!
Best bet to buy more ammo you cannot go wrong!
