The Latest Effort to Enact ‘Gun Control Without Legislation’
The Blaze.com ^ | 10NOV2014 | Jason Howerton

A “coalition” of local police departments, municipalities and clergy members are pushing for a “form of gun control without legislation” by pressuring gun manufacturers to start utilizing controversial “smart” gun technology, CBS New York reports.

The advocacy coalition believes smart gun technology — which makes it so only the owner can fire the gun — and inventory tracking can help reduce gun violence.

So far, 59 different jurisdictions have called on Glock and six other gun makers to “produce distribution records,” the report adds.

“We want to use the power of the marketplace, the power of the free market,” New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said.

While the effort reportedly received a “warm reception” from Ruger, other big companies like Glock and Beretta were apparently not open to the drastic changes. CBS New York reports “military and police gun purchases make up almost half the $11.7 billion firearms industry in the U.S.”

As previously reported by TheBlaze, critics have argued smart gun technology needs further development and should not be regulated by the government.

In a previous appearance on TheBlaze TV, Frank Miniter, author of “The Future of the Gun, recalled a conversation he had with a smart gun technology developer.

“I interviewed one of the developers of one of the coolest new smart guns, the Intelligun, and he actually had a little meeting with [U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder] where he told Holder, ‘If you try to mandate my technology, I will burn it down,’” Miniter said.

Say I am held up or mugged and manage to wrestle the gun out of the hands of the attacker. I guess all I can do is pistol whip him or take the gun home and use it as a door stop eh? What if I have oil on my hands and the gun won’t unlock when I am attacked and I get beat so badly I can never work Again. Can I sue the gun manufacturer out of existence? Wht if I won’t to buy a gun from someone else used?

You know they hvent’t thought of ny of this because the rel idea is to get us to agree to AnYTHING that changes the gun laws so they can topple the house. They don’t want to implement biometric gun controls. They just won’t to open the dialog so they cn take them away completely. When are people going to figure this out (other than FRpers)?

“We want to use the power of the marketplace, the power of the free market,” New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson said.

No, they're using the power of GOVERNMENT to disarm the citizens.

Fourth Amendment, anyone?

Once the police, FBI and Secret Service all field test and deploy as their only firearms, we can start the discussion. Do you think any of them will trust their life (or the life of their protectees) to this technology? Guessing not....

"What if I have oil on my hands and the gun won’t unlock"

Heck, what if you're just at the range and want to let someone fire your gun or you want to fire someone else's? Most of the different guns I've fired in my life were from a fellow enthusiast letting me try out his firearm at the range.

Yeah we know this issue has not one iota to do with safety. It’s about opening the dialog to remove them or make them non-functional pieces of metal...

“Pressuring?” Cops pressuring?
Hmmm. In another day and age, I think the correct words would be “extort” or maybe “intimidate.”
The cops need to lose their jobs and be charged for malfeasance.

Glock is manufactured in Georgia so they are not under any pressure to mass produce a smart gun. Leave it to the Blaxe to spread the panic. :-)

If this continues to spread you’ll see Glock pressured to do so.

Have Gruber and MIT been ‘advising’ the cops? This smells of totalitarian tricks...

Correct.

Whatever the issue seems to be is an illusion. For the leftists the issue is never THE ISSUE. It's just a means to an end.

THE ISSUE is the leftists' absolute power over you. They don't, for example, want to take your guns for the sake of taking your guns. Taking your guns is just a means to an end. What they want is for you, yes YOU PERSONALLY, to grovel before them in all things.

I can see the cops maybe buying this stuff but private citizens not so much. I think if you didn’t have an option to buy a non smart gun the sales would really slump. I don’t know anybody that would buy one.

I don’t see any traction at all for legislating this stuff. The legislatures are becoming more and more non gun control oriented.

This subject came up a few years ago and then died back down. There are always a minority of looney tunes trying to drum up some kind of gun nonsense.

. . . smart gun technology needs further development and should not be regulated by the government . . .

No. I own products from multiple firearms companies. In the event that Glock makes a "smart"-gun, I will never again buy anything from Glock. The same for Ruger, Remington, and the rest. Any manufacturer, retailer, or website that makes or sells a "smart"-gun will go on my boycott list forever. I don't want a weapon that is designed not to function.

While I'd be okay in theory with the idea of those who like unreliable products buying one, in the politicized world where the Second Amendment no longer means what it actually says, that is not acceptable. I will respond with the nuclear option to any company that enables poison pill legislation - laws infringing on our right to keep and bear arms as soon as a "smart"-gun is on the market. That crime against freedom will be devastating to America, and I do not forgive such crimes. Ever.

I hope those who agree will contact all the firearms companies and retailers that are considering this dangerous product and let them know the huge price they will pay for treason. I have already written to every company I deal with to let them know.

Far be it from me to be a party poop, but if the only people enthusiastic about your product are those who would never buy it in the first place, maybe it’s time to reconsider your business model.

I have no problem if they mandate that the POLICE use “safe” guns. Up until now, every place something obnoxious or dangerous is legislated, the police are made exempt. This would be the opposite. The police can then decide if they want to remain working there and trust their life to “advanced” technology.

I don't see what connexion this sentence has with the rest of the story.

Leftists have a hard time distinguishing between the free market and the government market.
