New England coastal communities threatened by feds' ban on cod fishing
Fox News ^ | November 12, 2014

Federal regulators slapped a six-month ban on most cod fishing off New England this week and are threatening to cut next year’s catch by up to 75 percent, in a move some say will destroy the livelihoods of fishermen across the region.

...

NOAA announced several measures, including the ban which expands no-fishing zones, on Monday. But fishermen whose livelihoods rely on catching cod, as well as the coastal communities that depend on money coming in from that industry, worry the new regulations will devastate them.

They won’t be happy until the American people are penniless, homeless, and shivering in the dark.

Dangit, they had a beer-battered cod special at a local restaurant last week. I skipped it, now I’m going to have to wait 6 months...

We've been reading about the cod wars for years now. The problem is a perfect example of the Tragedy of the Commons: When the resource is not owned by anyone in particular but by everyone in common, or by no one, it will be exploited and eventually depleted in a free for all.

Without some outside regulation, the Atlantic cod will be as dead as the passenger pigeon.

America must be punished for not bowing down to King Putt. Cod in New Enfland. Grouse in the west. Puddles in your back yard. Obama will punish this ungrateful nation.

And the idiot Dems will still rule because the natives (except me) believe it is in their bloodlines to vote D.
This is why Gruber is so convinced that Voters are stupid… Because in New England they TRULY are!

Hopefully in 2 yers President Cruz or another conservative president will get right on the blue state’s punishments Obama instilled. But there’s a long list of Red state issues that require his primary attention.

Perhaps in his second term he can be more flexable. Say for example keep the Blue state bans in place while helping entourage formation of Red state fishing fleets that have waivers to those waters in the interests of national security.

Hey fair is fair right? they like their Dem bans so they get to keep their Dem bans. Others didn’t and besides, ‘We won”. If the new Redstate exempt fleets had those blue state boats in the water, then overfishing may occur and thats bad for the environment.

New your can have the APA govern all the state instead of Hitlering the Adirondack park and put everyone out of work except their Sierra Club buddies. That’s fair.

Nevada is a special case since Reid is a special guy. We can put it up to a vote and if they prosecute Reid for his crimes/the casino guys come foreward and testify against him, we won’t pass that online gambling billl the other 49 states like.

States with access to resources like coal gas and oil can either open their lands to extraction or they can build wind farms quick because external deliveries will end.

A border fence will be built by illegals as payment for their illegally gotten benefits under Barry and when it’s done, we consider their rehab is complete and they are free to board the provided busses for a short ride home to Mexico. Along with their newly minted Mexican citizen former American friends that opposed building the fence. Some of them right here on FR.

This is all very fair and democratic, Reforms immigration, considers land use issues and the environment and we can all FEEL good about it.

I wonder how they let it get to the stage that they had to ban fishing for 6 months - this is an area where scientific research and the need for quotas so fishing stocks can be replenished needs to me listened to. Most fisherman are actually very compliant with monitoring fish stocks and reporting on tags etc as they realize it will guarantee them an industry in the future.

So I ask myself is this just the government flexing it’s muscle or has there just not been enough respect paid to research in this resource?

I’d bet this is a simple power grab and there are as many fish as ever. Or at least no danger to continuing populations.

Short version: Late 90s. Hualapai mountains above Kingman AZ. Back when I used to be with Off-Road,com. I went there to a BLM land use deal where they were considering closing that area because of the “Endangered Mexican Vole”.

Cue horror movie pipe organ.

The “Endangered Mexican Vole” has a slightly different name in America. The common meadow mouse.

There we all stood on a marked off trail several thousand feet up the side of a mountain where no meadow is to be found. So it’s not odd that a mouse common to meadows is not common in mountain goat territory.

Yer the fearless BLM chick instilled the importance of not stepping off the well trod path into the well trod surrounding area in this well trod off-road recreational area because SHOCK! she sprinted about 20 feet across rocky terrain and eagle eyed as if by magic, a blade of grass with the characteristic tooth pattern of (cue horror movie pipe organ music and Jamie lee Curtis scream) “The Endangered Mexican Vole”

We all looked at each other shaking our head at the obvious stage show and left. There is more to it, but thats the core of the story.

NEVER believe Govt on any green/land/eco issue. Ever.
