The Queen was applauded today in an unprecedented mark of appreciation as she led millions of Britons in remembering the fallen.
The monarch laid a wreath on the Cenotaph at the national Remembrance Day service alongside senior Royals, veterans and the Prime Minister despite heightened police checks, just days after officers thwarted an alleged terror plot.
The spontaneous smattering of applause, as she left Whitehall in central London, was a rare sound for a remembrance service usually characterised by respectful silence, and may have been in tribute to her fortitude at turning out to the service despite terror fears.
Hundreds of services have been held this morning across Britain 100 years after the First World War broke out, 70 years after D-Day and weeks after British troops left Afghanistan.

Absolutely jaw-dropping post you have here.
Make sure you see this from its source.
Great photos. Thanks.
A great old broad, I must say.
World War I changed everything, unfortunately.
Again, thanks for this outstanding follow up to yesterday’s poppy thread.
It’s a pleasure. You are most welcome.
All thanks due to The Daily Mail.
Great find. Thank you for the post.
I have just returned from a Remembrance service, in a tiny village in Ayrshire, which my retired parents moved to this year.
Despite being almost basically a collection of houses either side of a main road south, the village lost ten men in WW1 and three (including a DFC) in WW2. Over 30 men served from the village in both wars. Despite being a tiny village, the service on the village green at the war memorial was attended by 15 people, including veterans and young people. Passing traffic slowed in respect. Quiet, dignified and heartening.
I laid a small wooden cross with a poppy.
Thank you for the link. Very moving photos.
God bless those veterans and God bless those in Britain who still adhere to the principles that made her great.
Mrs. Windsor has a lot of Moxie. She has been a very good queen.
God save the Queen.
The Brits know how to do it!
