Gorbachev warns world ‘on brink of new Cold War’

Tensions between the major powers have pushed the world closer to a new Cold War, former Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev said Saturday.

The 83-year-old accused the West, particularly the United States, of giving in to “triumphalism” after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the communist bloc a quarter century ago. The result, he said, could partly be seen in the inability of global powers to prevent or resolve conflicts in Yugoslavia, the Middle East and most recently Ukraine.

“The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some are even saying that it’s already begun,” Gorbachev said at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, close to the city's iconic Brandenburg Gate. …

Yes they have problems, what country doesn’t? Russia did cause many of them.

Let them deal with their problems. That takes time. Time they were not given by Moscow.

Who says aligning with the EU would solve all their problems? Aligning with Russia would probably just mean slavery again.

I have actually been to Ukraine and have some fond memories of some the people I met there. I do wish them success. I don’t see how they can do anything but work with Russia — not as slaves, but as neighbors.

Do you think Russian armored brigades taking your territory is neighborly?

No. I never said I supported that. It did, however, happen because Ukraine decided to align with EU instead of Russia.

I do not see how aligning with EU is benefiting Ukraine. The only way to improve Ukraine’s economy is to do it alongside Russia. Improve both or there will be conflict. I see no way around it.

In order to be a normal country Ukraine should finally get rid of political corruption, entitlement mentality and start living within own means and by their brains.

They think high about own geopolitical value and prostituting their allegiance instead to one party at the time pissing off another for handouts shared by political class.

It never ends well for them and for parties investing in them too because their allegiance is windy due to obvious reasons.

This time they believe their president was Russian puppet and it allegedly brought them troubles. In a few years they would be disappointed in another president who would be considered Western puppet and they would blame the West. Just look at Ukrainian history. It has already happened more than once.

Kinda like a turd circling the bowl.

It happened because Russia wanted to invade and acquire Ukranian territory

I disagree entirely. If that were true it would have happened a long time ago.

Ukraine is foolish to align with EU, and I say that regardless of Russia.

From article: Paying tribute to the East Berliners who pushed past border guards to flood through the Wall on Nov. 9, 1989, Obama said in a statement Friday that "as Russia's actions against Ukraine remind us, we have more work to do to fully realize our shared vision of a Europe that is whole, free and at peace."

There is danger in the making here. The goal is to expand EU and the Russian/Ukraine conflict is a pawn in this game.

I can’t help but suspect that the sanctions against Russia by EU and US are more about forcing Ukraine towards EU than about protecting Ukraine from Russia.

If I were Ukrainian, I would trust Russia before EU.

It was and still clear that sanctions won’t affect Russian posture on Ukraine.

The main idea behind it is to bring discord between Russian elites and middle class and start trouble following a pattern seen in Egypt, Libya and Ukraine itself.

Of course if won’t ever work as planned and the middle class, which is the most interested in Russia being associated with the West and doing according to common interest, is factually hit hardest or probably eliminated at all enabling dark forces (under Putin presidency or someone’s else which doesn’t actually make difference) which are interested in widening confrontation without any restriction.

It might get really ugly.

As for Ukraine I don’t think we are in position to lecture them on allegiances. It is up to them but they have to wise up to start with and engage in alliances not purely politically but out of national interest in mind.

I was talking more about the motive of the US (Obama Admin.) and EU. I think they know sanctions won’t change Russia. I think they are doing it to move Ukraine closer to EU.

I actually think both Obama and EU are quite indifferent towards Ukraine.

I believe Ukraine was a premeditated trap for Russia to step in as a payback from Obama for Syrian embarrassment.

Interesting. Could be. But I also think the EU wants to enlarge itself and is more aggressive about it than they admit. It is deplorable to me that they can punish their competition (essentially) and no one thinks anything of it.

The growth of the EU is not a good thing, in my opinion. Too much power in too few hands is never good.

Mikhail Sergeyevich, you are such a f***ing LOSER! The mighty USSR disintegrated on your watch, most Russians hate your @zz, you’re nothing but another leftie hack doing articles for Harvard’s JFK school of diplomacy, and now you presume to give advice to the world!!!?

You seem upset that Reagan managed to shut down the Cold War at the USSR's expense.

That wasn’t upset, that was gloating!

Remember how Gorby tried at Rekyavik to persuade Reagan to give away the store on SDI? When Reagan refused, the Soviets bled themselves dry trying to catch up with the U.S. in armaments.

Gorbachev is far more popular among liberals in the West than he is in the Motherland, my point. And like most commies in search of meaning, hasn’t Gorby turned to environmentalism & saving polar bears?

Thanks for the clarification - my humor runs with the same ironic tone and I have gotten accustomed to giving hints for those who can’t fathom some of my comments. I know how a few of the minds here work - might catch on to yours too after a few more posts.
