It was Carl Davis who assisted McCartney with his "Liverpool Oratorio". Davis has written a lot of themes for British TV, to include his masterpiece "The World at War".
Even Sinatra couldn't read music. A lot of them feared they would lose their gift if they got into the details of how it was done. There aren't that many geniuses like Gershwin, Kern, Rodgers, Berlin and Porter who could do it all. That was a long time ago.

You're quite right, of course. I wonder what those guys could have done if they had taken the time to submit to instruction.
Their works stand as they are - I can't say that any of them is a Mozart or Schubert. I guess we will newer see the likes of Mozart or Schubert again.

Leonard Bernstein once pointed out that the period of European music that produced these geniuses lasted only a few centuries. By World War II, it had ended. In the long run of Western Civilization, it was a flash in the pan, but a beautiful flash.

A flash in the pan?
I beg to differ, Maestro - it was a cannonade issued forth that has dwarfed most of what has come after. Would that we could return to the Art produced then, with the Freedoms gained by our Founding Fathers, Children of the Enlightenment, who wove Lockiean principles of Freedom and Social Contract into our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

Perhaps not a flash. But those were some fine centuries.

Indeed they were - we need another Renaissance right now - the Human Race, IMHO is overachieving in producing gizmos and underachieving in producing lasting works - whether in Art or Music.
Bach, Beethoven and Brahms will be with us forever - their works are preserved on every kind of media we have been able to devise.
Unfortunately, the garbage now being generated is preserved right along side it. Will the material now being generated survive after our lives? Perhaps, but what will our descendants think of us fore producing it?
Perhaps our time will be regarded as a second "Dark Age." Technology advances, but not civilization.

Art and music were created in those days at the behest of an aristocracy not too far removed from the feudal era. The leveling spirit of democracy pushes against that. Art is about “man”, not “men”.
