#SEVEN hundred passengers and crew members were evacuated from the Bahamas Celebration after the cruise ship ran aground outside Freeport Harbour on Friday night. #Salvage crews have spent the day assessing the damage caused by a small hole in the side of the vessel after it ran aground 200 yards outside the port around 9pm. The ship returned to port and all passengers and crew left the ship safely.

Thats a bitch. Maybe Exxon is hiring.
I guess ramming into an island helps minimize the chances of sinking
2nd cruise ship in the last week - other was on it’s way to port in Norway (and that one ran aground for the 2nd time in a year). Love to know who’s teaching these guys navigation - NOT!
Still floating.
It’s good.
And that’s with all that high tech navigation equipment... Amazing...
This is not necessarily a bad thing. Those ships are big! I spent a week on one and never got to do or see everything. Something like 13 bars and I only got to see 11.
Freeport is in the Bahamas, but it isn’t really Bahamian; for that, you have to go to one of the out islands like Eleuthera or Abaco.
I was thinking the same thing. "No chance of sinking... because it's on land now."
I worked on a RCCL ship and probably visited Freeport maybe 19 times.
To get into port, the ship had to pass in a channel between two pretty long jetties. Thus, to get out of port, the ship had to either turn around, or, back out. Captain Thor always elected to turn the ship around upon arrival. Usually, these ports will impose massive fines upon the cruise ships if they overstay their scheduled window, so when it’s time to leave they want no funny business, hence, being pointed in the right direction is reco’ed.
This was a 962 foot long ship and there was an astoundingly small number of feet to spare on the turnaround. The method was, a crewman stood on the bow and pointed a laser rangefinder at the jetty the bow of the boat faced, same routine on the stern of the boat. The rangefinders were fed into the ship’s nav/propulsion computer, and the ship, being powered by azipods and with bow thrusters, made the turn (in place) with ease. It was quite impressive.
I hope ramming the island doesn’t cause it to flip over and capsize like Guam.
The ship's owners are not the people to blame.
Who does this cruise ship belong to? Sounds like those people that call (even when you’re on the do not call list) to tell you that you have won a free cruise. I’ve read reviews of those “free cruises” and they sound awful.
I hate cruise ships. They are allowed to dump thousands of gallons of raw sewage just a few miles off islands and land with impunity.
Local governments are too afraid of offending the tourist industries to ever do anything about the turds being dumped into the sea on a daily basis.
I have seen the miles long trail of brown sludge off the Big Island from those damn things. Eat, Eat!

Until the wind starts blowing.....
Pretty hard for a ship to sink when it’s already on the bottom I’m thinkin’
I hear ya, but if you saw it done, you’d be a believer! There was no hesitation, the ship hit a spot and started to spin in place, took maybe 1.5 minutes. I am sure the entire process was under computer control, surely inclusive of wind effects. I would wager that the ship’s nav system has a computer subroutine that can spin the ship around with no more than a 10 foot variance at either end, at the push of a button. I tried to talk to the captain about it, it didn’t seem like he thought it was any kind of big deal to miss those jetties by what seemed like 25 feet at each end!
