Germany 'Would Accept UK Exit From EU' To Protect Migration Rules

Angela Merkel is reported to have told David Cameron that she will not negotiate on EU migration

Chancellor Angela Merkel would rather see the UK exit from the European Union than compromise over the principle of free movement of workers, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel.

Mrs Merkel is alleged to fear that the UK is approaching a "point of no return".

Downing Street would not comment on the reports.

Mr Cameron wants to renegotiate the terms of the UK's continued membership before holding an in-out referendum.

The prime minister said that freedom of movement would be "at the very heart of my renegotiation strategy for Europe", but Mrs Merkel is said by the magazine to have made clear she will withdraw her support for the UK's continued EU membership if he continues to push for migration reform.

Point of no return

This is the first time that Mrs Merkel has acknowledged that the UK's exit from the EU is possible, Der Spiegel said.

I’d say fine.

Let the rest of Europe have unrestricted immigration if it wants.

UK should have left years ago. Norway and Switzerland never joined the EU and are doing just fine

Hmm. I was under the impression that Merkel was against unbridled 3rd World immigration into Europe (well, Germany, at least). I guess not?

Fine. Let her continue the “free movement of workers”, experience the consequences, and five years from now the EU will have reversed policy and will be frantically trying to stop something that’s become unstoppable.

A welfare state and open immigration is a recipe for total disaster.

Open immigration and no welfare works because only the hard-working will move to such a place. (The US was once like this)

A welfare state and no immigration can work because freeloaders from outside cannot get in. (Sweden used to be like this)

It would be best if the European Union in its present form be scrapped altogether. As a supranational government it is becoming a disaster with one size fits all micromanagement of every little detail. It would have worked as a loose free trade group. Instead it has turned into every control freak socialist’s dream come true.

She is. The dispute is over the movement of EU citizens within the EU.

Merkel is taking the right position. The US implements one stupid economic policy after another, yet it still beats Europe in every category of living standards. The is mainly because the US is the worlds largest free trade zone.

How nice of Germany.

Thank goodness Thatcher kept the British Pound or UK would have been absorbed long ago.
