OBSTACLES
"For a long time it had seemed to me that my life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in my way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles WERE my life." Fr. Alfred D Souza

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
BRAHMS: A GERMAN REQUIEMGravestones cheer the living, dear; theyre no use to the dead.
Rev. Gary Davis
Rather than write a Catholic Requiem Mass, Bach wrote a service that set verses from Luthers German Bible to music. This was purely a Protestant conception. The idea was to console the living, not concentrate on what the dead might be experiencing in the afterlife while the family sat comfortably in church.
But it was Johannes Brahms who executed that idea beautifully in his German Requiem. This was to be his first Top 10 hit and an overnight sensation in the world of choristers and sacred music.
The opening is mystical and comforting. How can you top this for a beginning? The key is a sublime F Major.
Brahms: A German Requiem, Blessed are They Who Mourn
The second movement turns dark but ends optimistically. Catch the horror and majesty at 3:02!
This is Klaus Tennstedt conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.
Brahms: A German Requiem, All Flesh is as Grass
Brahms could write tunes that were instant folk song. People would hear the melody years later and say, That was Brahms? When the fourth movement was first performed, most of the audience was in tears by the end. Clara Schumann, who had recently lost her husband Robert, was crying like a baby. Have your handkerchiefs ready.
This is Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic and Chorus.
Brahms: A German Requiem, How Lovely are Your Dwelling Places

Good evening, Maestro! You've been playing some of my favorites - I have had the good fortune to sing as a tenor chorister in all of these great Requiems. Please indulge me as I post this, the beginning of the Verdi Requiem"

It’s a nice conservative town. They shut down the old business district on Sundays.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.
G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

"TAKE UP THY CROSS AND FOLLOW ME"
"I Vow To Thee My Country" Choir Of King's College, Cambridge (Click)
"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."
