HALLOWEEN: SPOOKY CLASSICAL MUSIC
SCHUBERT: THE ERL KINGThis is the greatest of all Schubert songs, and he was only 16 when he wrote it! The singer must handle the voices of the narrator, the young boy, the father, and the Erl King, who is the Danish symbol of death. Schuberts setting of this Goethe poem shook up the musical establishment of its time, and even Goethe was shocked by it when it was played for him several years after Schuberts death.
When the father tells his son that all he sees is mist, the modulation to A-flat Major sounds like the voice of utter hopelessness. The Erl King comes across as the kind of sprite who would enjoy pulling the wings off flies or little boys.
This is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau accompanied by Gerald Moore, taken from a 1961 televised concert. Watch how he acts the four parts. His face as he assumes the persona of the Erl King is frightening. In German with English subtitles.
Schubert: Der Erlkönig, D. 328

Hey Prof!
(GENTLE HUG AND CHASTE KISS RETURNED)
It’s going okay, thanks!
Have you ever heard Annie Lennox sing “Love song for a vampire”?
It’s beautiful and haunting.
It’s from the movie that Gary Oldman play the part of Dracula in.
