How do we make sense of the fact that Americas most progressive cities, the ones that cherish diversity, are losing African Americans? And that the most conservative places are doing the opposite?
Between 2000 and 2010, cities like Austin, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Franciscoplaces that vote majority Democrat, consider themselves socially and culturally progressive, and boast racial diversityall lost unprecedented numbers of African Americans. San Francisco, for instance, saw a staggering 20.4 percent loss in its African American population between 2000 and 2010. Chicago and Washington D.C. also experienced double-digit losses.
During that same decade, the only three major cities (populations over 500,000) that voted Republican in the 2012 presidential election Phoenix, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma Cityall saw significant increases in African American numbers; their African-American populations grew by 36.1 percent, 28 percent and 11.4 percent respectively.

Interesting article.
Funny. I thought it was a case of more d more whites being crowded into black victimhood.
"Safety first." /S
Problem right in the headline. They are not “pushing” anybody.
Hipsters.
well, i guess that’s what happened in Ferguson. the detritus left St louis chased away by millenials to Furfguson
Democrat cities will soon be offering blacks free homes, cash bonuses, tax rebates and other incentives to entice them to move to their ghettos.
Liberal cities have to keep a certain percentage of blacks in the population to maintain their liberal credentials and be accepted as equals by other liberals.
Imagine how embarrassing it would be for a liberal from a city with a shortage of blacks to face liberals from another city with an abundance of blacks.
It could damage their self esteem not to mention their standing in the liberal community.
I think of it as freeing them from entrapment in the bad-school, high-crime, food-desert, deprivations of their previous life.
Demographically, this just means that the gimmedats are polluting more conservative areas, diluting the strength of the responsible bloc. It’s what happened to Colorado when the California refuse moved there. And Washington. And Oregon. The only way to contain it is at the state level.
Simple. They don't meet.
No more than liberals from cities with a shortage of working class whites meet liberals from cities with an abundance of working class whites. It's two different worlds. Maybe two different kinds of liberals.
So, no, San Francisco isn't going to try to entice working class or poor African-Americans any more than Ithaca or Madison does.

One word: economics.
The problem exists greatly in Brooklyn, NY — my neighborhood in particular, which was heavily comprised of middle class (as well as “ghetto”) blacks. Hipsters attracted to the brownstones are arriving in droves; real estate prices have gone through the roof. Some African-Americans have sold for hefty sums & moved elsewhere. Unfortunately that leaves the rest fretting about the erosion of their demographic.
Theoretically, I support gentrification. Better coffee bars than vacant lots with roving gangs. The problem, though, is those of us, black or white, who are on modest incomes. We can’t afford to stay in the city, period.
I predict mass migration of a lot of low- or modest-income people to the smaller towns. There might be a positive outcome — these places will be revitalized, as these people are family-oriented. The city will become a haven for the wealthy, the singles (especially gays), and maybe some leftover public housing projects.
Compton is no longer Black majority.
It ‘so called gentrification!
It happened in the late sixties and seventies as well. The left ‘s push to herd people into the cities has had lots of unintended consequences that should have been obvious to anyone who cared to look a little more deeply than the benefits of the short commute and great social life of the city.
I’ve noticed this as well. Especially San Francisco.
I did not know the converse was true, but am not surprised.
It’s just another example why conservatism is best for blacks, and best in general and the liberals are at the best blind hypocrites.
