Danica Patrick has revved up some controversy, questioning whether NASCAR needs its Drive for Diversity program, which aims to increase female and minority participation in the racing car series.
I have never benefited from the Diversity program, Patrick said on Friday after a reporter from the Danville (Va.) Register and Bee asked her about diversity in stock car racing. NASCAR honored Wendell Scott, the only African-American to win in its top-level series, at its event in Martinsville, Va., this past weekend. Scott, who was born in Danville, won a Grand National (predecessor to Sprint Cup) race in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1963. Darrell Wallace, Jr., took the checkered flag at the Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville in 2013, becoming only the second African American to win a race in one of NASCAR's national series, and repeated the feat on Saturday in a truck wearing Scott's number and paint scheme.
Patrick cut short a follow-up question about what needs to be done for more women to enter NASCAR, saying, Well, clearly then I wouldnt think that there needs to be a diversity program if Im here and I didnt get in.

I looked up that Dick Trickle piece you mentioned. A truly beautiful piece of writing even to someone who doesn’t follow racing.

She is either getting better or getting luckier.
She also led for 7 laps at Talladega and around 20 other drivers didn't.
How many of her critics could do laps at 190 mph?
I'm not one of her big fans but there are many other drivers with worse records who don't get the criticism she does.
I do think she is good for NASCAR at a time when attendance and revenue is down.
“Would a regular guy or an ugly girl have the ride Danica has with the same lack of victories?”
Yes, she may be in denial that it’s not all about her merits...
“I suppose they could throw some affirmative action females and minorities into racing, but what happens when the AA drivers lose all the time?”
You just blame someone else; the NY Jets are doing that with TWO token quarterbacks who suck. All last season the commentators referred to Geno Smith as “the rookie Geno Smith” to deflect criticism of his lack of talent; he and Vick are “too black to fail”. FWIW, the “black quarterback” question was settled decades ago by Doug Williams with his Super Bowl win; now it is just about re-distributing wealth with affirmative action hiring.
I think that is a good evaluation. I don’t care if she is
regarded as a woman or not.
Put your ass in a race car and race. She’s got moxy!
Everybody looks as her as a girl in a man’s race.
Start dropping some dollars on this and that notion goes away!
Welcome to the big leagues everyone.

Thank you! She’s had a tough row to hoe breaking into NASCAR and I think it’s been fun. She’s spunky, fiesty, determined, focused and she learns a lot from every race. Some of the other drivers have been bullheaded about it but others have been fine. Just like the comments posted here. She was leading laps last weekend and it was thrilling. A lot of women NASCAR fans get a kick out of watching her compete. Cut her some slack, enjoy the racing, and join in the fun. She also brings attention and dollars to NASCAR and that’s good for the sport especially in these hard times. Nothing wrong with that.
Exactly. In Florida when you call a state agency the party answering the phone 99.9 percent of the time will be young, female, and either a black or a hispanic. Try being an older white male landing one of those jobs. Another great example of “institutional diversity” is the Tampa Bay Bucs. A ten million dollar a year country club for every black ball thrower runner tackler and catcher on the team. Whites need not apply. The largest voluntary reparations program in the U.S.run by the white guilt-ridden Glazer family. I wouldn’t go to a football game for anything. And no wonder the media is so happy about our Marxist schools replacing baseball with dumbass European and South American soccer. We are being hispanicized.
Wait, they’ve had a “diversity” program for 10 years and all they have to show for it is one black driver and one woman driver (I notice they didn’t mention Juan Pablo Montoya)? Apparently they are “more committed than ever” to a really unsuccessful program. How about a “Wins Races” program, Nascar? Let’s try that, whaddya say?
Hey, lets not forget about the need for diversity in cranberry farming too!
As in any professional sport, if you can cut it, you play. If you can’t cut it, you go home. And if you want it badly enough, you’ll make the effort.
I think it’s about time for diversity in swimming.
There will be less crashes because anyone who runs into a black driver will be fined for being a racist.
She's a driver. Of course she looks better with a car behind her.
A NASCAR diversity program?
How about a diversity program for the NBA?
She may not have all that many wins but finishes in the money most of the time. She is a good driver in a tough sport
“Diversity” aside, “Bubba” Wallace has won two truck races because he’s a pretty solid young driver. He’d be where he is regardless of a “diversity” program because NASCAR isn’t about black or white, it’s about green, and Wallace has the talent to compete.
