Danica Patrick has revved up some controversy, questioning whether NASCAR needs its Drive for Diversity program, which aims to increase female and minority participation in the racing car series.
I have never benefited from the Diversity program, Patrick said on Friday after a reporter from the Danville (Va.) Register and Bee asked her about diversity in stock car racing. NASCAR honored Wendell Scott, the only African-American to win in its top-level series, at its event in Martinsville, Va., this past weekend. Scott, who was born in Danville, won a Grand National (predecessor to Sprint Cup) race in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1963. Darrell Wallace, Jr., took the checkered flag at the Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville in 2013, becoming only the second African American to win a race in one of NASCAR's national series, and repeated the feat on Saturday in a truck wearing Scott's number and paint scheme.
Patrick cut short a follow-up question about what needs to be done for more women to enter NASCAR, saying, Well, clearly then I wouldnt think that there needs to be a diversity program if Im here and I didnt get in.

That would mean only one on the floor out of five in any game. College, Pro, HS, etc.
Do you watch Sprint NASCAR races GeronL?
I’ll tell you, for a 100# female she has been driving the wheels off her car lately. Yesterday she took it to Jimmy Johnson, he couldn’t get by her. Indy car is by far the most dangerous series and she withstood that. I used to think the glam factor was what brought her in, but the lady really can drive.
She has real mental and physical toughness to hang with the big kids on the worlds premier racing series. I’m a race fan from the mid ‘60s and while F1 is the high tech series, NASCAR is the physical series, for a small woman she’s the real deal
Not for a long time now. I used to watch a lot thinking these were more down-to-earth people than other sports and media.
They aren’t really any better or more normal at all.
“When you consider her finishes, Yes”
The only way you get experience at being at the front, is by being at the front. She is doing that now.
I think she takes a LOT more flak simply because she is a female, but doesn’t seem to let that get to her. She’s always played against the boys, and it is no different now.
My daughter has some of the same in her, and now she’s turning wrenches on airplanes. That is definitely a male-dominated “sport”.
I remember when the US Army was sponsoring Joe’s car, and they had some soldiers there for one of the races. Joe’s Mom was there and spent the day with them. They has so much fun they wanted to take her back with them.
That is an honest post.
She may not be the next Ricky Rudd or Ernie Ervan but she can tangle pretty good. Posters here have no idea what measures she has weighed to get where she is.
The fact that she is a “looker” has no relevance @ 200mph.
Read your post. It makes absolutely no sense.
Happy October!
Yes, I think she’s come a long way and she seems to do well on the larger tracks like Daytona and Talladega. Normally, she falls behind on the short tracks but she really held things together yesterday. I have no problem with Harvick’s comments about her inexperience because it’s probably the truth. I don’t know all the nuances between Indy Car tracks and and NASCAR but she is learning each week.
There was a great article recently about dick trickle. It was entitled An elegy for Dick Trickle.
Great insight on his life. Pure racer.
Brad keselowski called her an excellent 30th place driver.
Umm... Harvick is going after Kenseth.
I AM RR!
I suppose they could throw some affirmative action females and minorities into racing, but what happens when the AA drivers lose all the time? And who the hell is supposed to put up the millions for them to lose? Would the next step be to give AA drivers a head start at the staring line and/or allow them to have faster cars? You know, to be “fair”.
Didn’t you know that white boys can’t jump?
Wait until some liberal group files a discrimination lawsuit on behalf of a blind man and a quadriplegic.
Good for Danica. Racing drivers tend to be independent, self reliant types anyway.
I guess NACSAR is gonna have to learn braille...
